Are people reporting mpg measured at the pump or what's displayed on the trip computer in the car?
My v70 is returning 41-43mpg on mainly dual carriageway/motorway or country road, little time around town. This is measured at the pump at wach fill up. Trip computer shows 46.5 and hasn't been reset for around 8000miles. I don't drive fast, rarely above 80 on motorway, usually around 70. Is my v70 with roof rails really 8-10mpg worse than an s60? I know it's heavier and less aerodynamic. How much difference do the roof rails make over those that don't have them? New intercooler fitted last April made 3-4mpg difference. New magnatec oil put in week before Christmas.

Magnatec doesn't give the best mpg. You get better fuel consumption with a full synthetic.

Trip trip trip to ???
I measure my S60 D5 fuel consumption be keeping a record of fill ups and mileage. The trip computers on all the Volvos I have owned have been optimistic, usually by around 8%. The mileometer manages to be very accurate though. The only car I have owned with a 100% accurate MPG display was a Rover 827 Vitesse hatchback and that had a fuel flow meter to give it the info. Heck I have now let it be know that I owned an 827. The shame!!

Auto express sponsored some tests which Thule spout in their sales spiel : http://www.autoexpress.co.uk/news/au...thbusters.html I am not happy with the basis of part of the tests , its based on some poor engineering practice , I do not believe that a 72kg load in a roof box makes no difference to the fuel consumption . If this could be proved by doing proper tests then the effect of roof rails alone would not be measurable but this does not make sense to me . |

The tyre pressure results are odd as well. The bike club I belong to tested loads of tyres at different pressures and they all used far more energy at lower pressures. Try riding a bicyle with the tyres fully pumped then at low pressure, you can really feel the difference for yourself. I suspect the bikes on the back affected the aerodynamics. Interesting they never tested the bike rack and bikes on their own. Engine oil makes a difference as well. Magnatec dosn't give the best mpg.
