Could be. I had read about this on another thread.
Where is the throttle body?

Ah. I'm guessing this would be a good place to start.
Could I just remove the pipe on the front to check it and possibly free it up?
That way I could get it done temporarily before I drive home.

I've just had the pipe off and the throttle flap is moving fine. Bit gutted as that would have been an easy fix. Just checked the oil again and it has lost just over 500ml from yesterday. It's never lost oil on me before. I can see a little bit dripping down from the back of the engine.

The turbo is behind the engine, perhaps the seals have gone?

White smoke can be water, that mixed with your oil loss could point to a head gasket.

It can also be un-atomised un-burned diesel and the BBQ smell you describe would fit that hypothesis.

If it were not for the oil loss I would say you have a sticking (open) injector or two. As that was my issue but I never lost any oil and 1/2 liter is a lot to loose in a short time.

It can be hard to detect the throttle flap sticking, it will move freely up until the very extremes of its travel. Mine moved freely until it got completely shut and then it would occasionally stick there.

I managed to get it to a garage but they wouldn't bother putting the diagnostics on as the oil and smoke etc. was a clear turbo malfunction. My father-in-law knows some turbo specialist who might be able to have a look and may do a bit of a favour. Fingers crossed.
Cheers for all the help guys.

Bugger!

When you said it was white/light smoke it was then clear it wasn't just a pipe split. It's unfortunate to hear of your turbo demise. What is your current mileage and what sort of service history has the car got??

Turbo's can and do fail but in real terms it is not a common problem depending on mileage and how it has been used and serviced. Clearly the damage will have been done prior to you obtaining the car but do you let the car run for a minute before driving off and also when stopped and before turning the engine off (run down period)? This can prolong the life of a turbo, as well as NOT revving hard before the engine is up to temperature.

Hope you get sorted soon enough.

Its got 120000 miles on it btu a full service history from volvo. I got it in december at 140000 miles but have pretty much done none of the above. Never had a turbo before so was maybe getting a little carried away. Lesson learned.
Guessing its not that easy to get the turbo off but I have a have a few weeks off now. Can it be done on a driveway?
