I have checked the pulleys for the ac belt (small one) and neither pulleys are seized.

Can only assume the belt just let go!

Yes. Your crank pulley should be orientated the same as mine.

The AC pulley will be disengaged and freewheeling with the engine off.
With the engine running, it may still be seizing when the AC clutch is engaged and the compressor is working.

Thanks for the info Cheshired5. Think I need to see if it will run before I fit my new £20 ac pump belt.

Is there a tried and tested (safe) method to check the ac pump once the engine is running ?

Looking at one of the pics I took during strip down, I noticed the camshaft sprocket bolts are noticeably at one end of the fixing hole.

Is this normal ?

Is there a process to follow to ensure the cam sprocket is located/aligned correctly ?

Thanks

Or the ac compressor self is seized and engaged at the time of snapping
If the clutch is disengaged now you wont notice it.
Maybe worthwhile checking

That picture of the camshaft bolts out of alignment, surely thats a decent indication of the force that has been inflicted on the camshaft via the belt etc. Id be winceing my nuts off seeing that.

Hopefully your engine is intact.

I've lost count of the number of people who have posted on this forum that the aux belt has snapped and interfered with the cam belt causing a wrecked engine. For every person that posts on here there'll be 10 who have the same happen but not found this forum, or not wanted to.

It's a pity that some sort of class action has not been brought against Volvo. Amateur engineering that went on for years without any fix. Replacing the tensioner under recall helped, but the engine should have some sort of cover protecting the cam belt.

How can it happen frequently on 2004 cars and by 2010 it still feels like Volvo had done very little about it.

I'm a more nervous 58 plate D5 owner.

I completely agree, you would have thought a drive belt failure causing the cambelt to go would have the volvo design team come up with at least some sort of bolt on fix,is there any feedback on the bolt on cambelt protector accessory someone devised and sold them on here,or is it still early days yet,i am a bit jittery even though i have replaced both belts and tensioners etc, because i'm on 276k miles i am thinking maybe it would be wise to replace the air con pump for a less mileage one in case that went.

So finally got the new timing belt, tensioner & idler pulley fitted. Crossed my fingers and pressed the start button!
Car started and seems to run fine. Not really sure what the engine should sound like as bought it as a repair project.

See below links to videos of the engine running on you tube:

I would appreciate some feedback from D5 owners as to whether it sounds like it's running right ?

Took it out for a drive, pulls like a train and runs fine but just want to make sure it's right.
