Default Engine Swap

If you decide on an engine swap, I'd suggest you consider the 2.4T5 unit.

1) Its more numerous and thus should be easier (and cheaper??) to source.
2) The liners in the block are thicker and not as prone to cracking as the R liners are. Making the engine in theory more reliable.
3) With very minimal tuning the engine can jump from the 260 BHP to the R @ 300bhp and beyond if required.

I have read several articles detailing the procedure ( but as usual when you look they don't come straight to hand) - Swedespeed.com or others similar would be a port of call.

Please keep us informed here of what you do.

Cheers
Bob

At 180k miles the PCV is way overdue and can surely cause sump sludge with oil pick up screen blockage and worst - poor rod bearing lubrication, which sounds like what you describe. Long oil change intervals or lower quality oil can accelerate all this

Hi

I do indeed think it's thrown a rod yes. I'm in contact with a few people now to discuss getting the girl back on the road. She will live once again! I will keep everyone updated.

Thanks to everyone that has provided help both in the thread and via PM so far.

Would also recommend 2.4 T5 engine to avoid cracked line issue.

Hi all

Just an update. I picked up a R engine complete with exhaust manifold and K24 turbo for £900 at the weekend.

Engine swap next week!

Do you know its history??

I might be tempted to check the cylinder liners before installation, and if OK get them shimmed. This type of work easier with an engine on the bench. Spending this sort of money infers the cars going to be a "keeper" so worth the extra spend.????????

Hi

Yes I'm going to get it shimmed. I contacted snabb UK who put me onto one of their customers that was having an engine and turbo conversion so I did the deal for their engine and turbo. They were going for 500bhp build apparently!

Saw the engine history and servicing details.

They were only 40 miles away too. Once the car is back on the road I'm taking it to either Shem, snabb or Tim Williams to get shimmed. I heard these guys are the best. They are all really far away though. Would appreciate feedback on them!
