It's difficult to describe to be honest, there's a slight increase in noise under the bonnet which I can hear whilst I'm driving, it sounds like something is being pumped through the system. It only happens occasionally, the intervals being what I'd expect for the DPF regeneration to happen. It's always done it since I've had the car, and it seems to last for the same amount of time. The car has never indicated anything is wrong so I'm pretty sure it is the regeneration process happening. It also never happens when the car is cold, on my previous commute it used to happen at pretty much the same stage of my journey, when the car has been driven for a good 30 minutes. My car has been properly serviced and maintained by an excellent specialist and drives like new (116K on it) so I'm sure that's what it is, I have no reason to suspect anything else.

I find the range and instantaneous MPG drop significantly when my car is doing it.

A full regeneration sequence lasts roughly 30 km.

So 50mph or so on a long steady run is okay & there’s no need to drop a gear?
DPF regen is triggered only if enough soot accumulated in the DPF filter - 25-28g. Once this threshold is reached, the DPF regen will start even in traffic jam. Motorway driving is beneficial for DPF, as hardly any soot accumulates at high speeds, but spirited driving itself will not trigger the process unless soot threshold is reached.

How do you get a soot reading and dpf temp reading?

Is that something most Volvo's of this age can do?

Yes, soot level can be read in Car Scanner ElmObd2 for android or iphone. Works with all P3-platform Volvos after 2007.
Connection profiles:
2008+ for 5 cylinder engines
2014+VEA for 4-cylinder VEA engines

Sure, vida/dice will show dpf soot.
But smartphone is easier to use while driving, and Car Scanner reads cars up to 2018. Vida2014d cannot read cars after MY2015.

The engine needs to be fully warmed up , The reading from the DPF pressure sensor needs to suggest that the pressure in the DPF is higher than a certain threshold , the journey you are on is suitable .. ie. not just going from stop and start and stop etc .. If you have been doing 50 + mph for a while it will happen , if you have to stop it will carry on where it left off next time ..
I generally know when mine is cycling- big drop in mpg, fan running when idling etc. If the regen is not completed when you arrive home and switch off will it continue the following day?
