Bristol Volvo quoted me £299 for a basic service on my D5 recently. Would drop it to £269 for VOC members. Seems reasonable, actually with the free breakdown cover I think it’s a very good price.

Cheers , I disagree
Breakdown cover is £60 (AutoAid)
So £200 for oil and filter / software update - seems steep to me given they can’t quantify what the ‘update’ is

Some software packages, like infotainment and navigation software (not maps) are too big for that. They require that the software is first transferred to a USB stick, which is then plugged into the car and installed from there. That's too much to do during a normal service.

But smaller updates, to engine, gearbox, climate control and other control units, they are all included on an as needed basis.

My experience is as above. My XC60 has an early sensus nav that can only be USB updated after being enabled at the dealer. I had to pay for this and the infotainment update, to cure the black screen of death issue common on these models.

I asked if this was covered during a service and was told it wasn't. Only critical updates were included and all others were chargeable.

Anyway, I ended up paying £190 for the updates which cured the infotainment system, and I can now update maps via usb.

It really depends upon what your £60 buys you. Volvo Assistance covers all of continental Europe as well as the UK. It recovers your car to a genuine Volvo dealership. AutoAid charges £10.57 per day for European cover! It might not be of interest at this COVID moment but for the last 5 years it would have added about £200 to the £66 for the UK roadside and recovery from AutoAid. The basic AutoAid cover is good as it allows you to recover to anywhere in the UK but the devil in all these scheme is always in the fine print! The combination of the software update, the free brand new Vovo courtesy car and the year's recovery service isn't a bad incentive to use my local Volvo dealership who are very good and not at all exploitive.

Sadly only for one more upgrade later this year. Then Volvo will cease to upgrade maps on your system. Reprehensible on their part!

Totally agree. It really is a disgrace. Newish cars with sat navs that can't be updated. Surely they should support for 10 years?

Do you know what years the lack of updating affects?

I do know it affects my XC70 which is the same MY2012 as yours! I think it affects all the cars with the Sensus sat nav system which were disc loadable but were capable of being upgraded to down loading from the internet via a USB thumb drive. The real insult is that Volvo charged for that upgrade and now it will be of no value to the owner after only three map upgrades! The 10 year rule applies to parts for cars from the date of the last car of the type to be produced. That certainly would cover XC70s up top 2026 but since this is software, it seems that Volvo can do whatever they want.

I get all sorts of gremlins in my 2010 reg xc70 D5se 205 Geartronic, the car runs and drives spot on , but the Electrical accessories fitted like BLIS, Park Assist, Lane Warning etc etc seem to have a mind of their own and on occasions will work properly, but other times wont. eg, i could park the car in my garage with nothing working right, and go for it next day and everything would spring to life as they should.
I am booked into my local Volvo Main Dealer for a service and Software Upgrade, but although these things like a dealer service were neglected by the previous owner who didnt have anything recorded dome to the car for over 50k miles, I hope the Software upgrade can fix the problem without it wasting money with no positive results.
