In my view an original Volvo part is going to be the correct fitment (fit and forget) but also likely to have benefited from design upgrades over the years. Very often manufacturers learn from parts failures and upgrade the design on an ongoing basis.

The matrix sounds like a ball ache to align properly but I'd imagine the Volvo one would drop in lovely and the pipes line up which is so important to get a good seal. Not sure an aftermarket unit would be so good.

Another thing to consider is that heat-exchanger outputs can vary even at the same physical size, the Volvo one would be most efficient at heating air, especially at higher fan speeds commanded by the Climate ECU.

Maybe it depends on garage and all but my OEM waterpump fitted in OEM dealership failed after 2 years and was basically told "f* off, not our problem, pay for labour again" so I would be wary about this...
as for decision - for me its simple.
If you plan to keep the car - go OEM.
if not - use aftermarket part.

Welton - I agree about coolant, It may have an important factor, atleast I like to think that way and keep using OEM volvo one for every coolant change, but reality is I am afraid its just postponing the inevitable... :/
