You don't necessarily need an arc welder, 'griston64'.

In the days long before smart chargers I once left a battery on a trickle charger (2-3A) in my garage overnight.

On entering the garage the following morning, I was assailed by the smell of rotten eggs. The battery had literally exploded; a large part of the casing was lying on the floor at the other end of the garage over four meters away ...

Both the bench upon which the battery was standing and the tool box beneath it bear scars from the acid spilt upon them to this day. While I did not enjoy the clean up, I was also very glad that I hadn't been there when it let go ...

Regards, John.

It's not unknown for 12v batteries on EVs to have issues, the batteries don't get a workout turning over a cold engine and the charging 'conditions' for maintaining 12v charge from the traction battery can be a bit hit and miss.
