boost readings volvo s40 t4
hi guys i finally fitted the boost gauge this weekend and wanted to confirm some readings please help/comment -fitted it at the frontend engine there a spare vacumm nipple near the trottle body then ran the pipe into the car drivers side cant even make out it wasnt factory :-) -ok now the readings at idle it shows about -0.6 then when i put it into gear its about -0.4 (auto) when im on the road and plant it goes to around +1.1bar sometimes but never below +0.9bar boost -at acceleration it goes to 1.1bar then slowly drops to about 1bar finally sitting at about 0.9bar -the first day i put it it goes to 0.9bar and stuck there but yesterday i noticed it going to as above 1.1bar -im not sure if the really cold weather we having causes it to boost a bit extra -ps volvo did slightly turn up my boost when i complained at first -what worries me is if this car is really sittiing at1.1bar boost at my last dyno day 2 weeks back my car made only 176bhp atw (reef )and 283nm weres as the golf 5 gtis stock made about 182bhp and 289nm ?

I think that sounds about right...
Before I got mine chipped my boost gauge read about -0.7 at idle (once the engine was warmed up and at the normal idle speed) and peaking at just over 0.9bar - just occasionally hitting 1 bar. I'm not sure what the transmission losses are on an Auto, but I'd have thought 176bhp at the wheels would be well over 200bhp at the flywheel. The transmission loss for a manual might be around 10-15% and would be higher for an Auto

thanks tim lets say it was an optimistic dyno but relative to other cars on the day the info was useful -so it is normal for a car set at a certain boost to run past that sometimes ? like overboosting ? ps whats the safest boost these s40 t4s can run without chipping safely thanks again in advance

I think a variation of about 0.1 bar in the peak boost isn't much to worry about, maybe its just down to atmospheric conditions. Mine is running at 1.5 bar at the moment (according to my boost gauge anyway) and hasn't blown up yet.
I'm not too sure what the maximum safe boost without chipping is, maybe 1.1-1.2 bar? There is a member on here (V6en) who used to use a mechanical boost controller on her T4 before getting it remapped - you could doing a search for her posts.

im a 850 t5 owner and only run 14psi, overboost protection cuts in at 15psi. 1 bar is 14 psi... your running 21 psi !!! i bet its torque steer everywhere. lol wayne. edit. a car set up on a mild day will show moor boost pressure on a cold day. air density.

Right underneath the radio, not the most elegant way but I wanted it to be easily removable (see picture)

the only practical place to put it is on the side post -mines on the side were there is that document clip thing i made a bracket and clipped it to this it holds perfect -still havent hooked up the light yet not sure if im going to yet - the clip also means i can easily un hook it for motorplan visits
