Angry MPG - not what it says on the tin

Hello everyone,

I've had an XC90 D5 for year... living in country it still registers 25.3 mpg after one year - yet in brochure states 34.0 mile mpg combined.

When told Volvo initially they said "it should settle down"

This is nearly 25% off stated... anyone else faced similar situation???

Do they do these mileage tests based on one Size zero model driving it or something?

Appreciate feedback....trying to build consensus and confront Volvo

Thanks,

my fathers xc90 d5 averages between 33 and 36mpg, which is a mixture of around town and motorway.

is yours a geartronic by chance, cos these are known to hit the fuel consumption hard when combined with the d5 engine.

unless you're constantly around town or drive in an "on off" fashion, i think 25mpg is a little poor. anything over 30 average is about right for these.

Hi ,
thanks for reply, yes it is geartronic D5, but we certainly not the on/off type... plenty of motorway driving etc.... the brochures claims are ridiculous... am chasing up with Volvo.
Cheers

Default Poor fuel consumption

Hi Grits,

Let me know what they say !!! I average about 26 mpg on my D5 geartronic (but I am heavy footed and it is mostly around town). I have never managed to get a trip to average over 32 mpg. My mpg has never got better in the year I have owned it and when my dealer did a fuel consumption test, they said it was normal. Also, maybe your computer is wrong ... I know mine over-estimates by approx 10% to try to make me feel better !!!

Regards,
Patrick.

Default 07 d5 Geartronic

Hi
have a new 07 D5 geartronic and only done 2 tanks of fuel since collection.

ave 26.1 mpg at moment, 50% motorway, 50% local, very easy on pedal so would have expected a little more.
However lower than stated by volvo but more than the Audi Allroad I had previously which achieved 23mpg.
Once past 1000 miles I will work engine a little more and who knows... I assume this mpg will go down!!

Default Average MPG

We have a D5 185 geartronic and the fuel consumption is very pleasing for such a big car - my wife is rather heavy footed and we are still averaging 34+mpg with very mixed driving. I would point out that our previous D5 163hp was rather more disappointing and averaged about 26, never take too much notice of fuel computer it's not that accurate.

Hi,
Your MPG will depend on a lot of factors. One factor alot of people ignore is hard braking.it is not just harsh acceleleration that consumes a lot of fuel.
Incidently, my average MPG was 30ish pre chipping and I average 34ish post chipping.

2.4 diesel geartronic

i have on 05 163 geartronic and it returns 30ish mpg combined and has been as high as 35-6 on a run if that helps, it's not chipped either.

My experiences are the sames as yatesspud - same engine etc same economy though I have noticed that if I do extended running around town the mpg drops to the low 20s

Just passed the 9000 mile mark with a MY07 XC90 D5 185 Geartronic today and the average fuel consumption for this milage is 35.2 mpg.

6000 of the above milage includes two round trips from the North of Scotland to the South of France.

Compared to the MY05 XC90 D5 163 Geartronic, the 185 is slightly heavier on fuel, but maybe with time, things may improve.
