P2 XC70 2006/2007 North America
Shifting across the pond and looking to pick up a P2 as may only be there for a couple of years so should get one cheap enough. They are all petrol and automatics too.
Is there anything specific to look for? PCV valve I have seen mentioned but don't know what that entails. Timing belt 100,000 miles? Most I have seen online are above this. Quite a few have sun roofs. Are they prone to leak? Thanks in advance. |

Going from my 2005 2.4 petrol v70, when I replaced my pcv it was surprisingly clean but guessing that has something to do with it being petrol rather than diesel. It's worth checking the history to see if it's been changed. Otherwise there's a trick you can try with a rubber glove over the oil filler cap to see if it's good: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FOxfvzEFpYg
Just don't loose the glove into the engine! |

Does that mean something is on the way out? I am not familiar with this lump, so don't know the ins and outs.

having VIDA is the best way to look at faults but another thing you can do just as a general indicator is..
igntion at pos 2 (i think?) hold button in at end of left stalk. turn rear fogs on and off twice (4 presses) the little screen should then let you cycle though the various modules by repeatedly pressing the left stalk button 'ready' is ok 'set' means there's a fault code 'pending' or 'checking' (?) just means not checked yet not necessarily an issue then you can google what each of those things are and go from there |

The sunroofs seem to have a great track record as leaking ones don't come up. I'm embarrassed to admit I don't even know where the drain holes are.
You want to inspect the handbrake for effectiveness (the design is lousy), ability to release (goes to lubrication/condition), and most of all a visual (removal of rotor is necessary) to see if chunks of brake material are free to whirl around and cause damage, Get the automatic fully warmed up and drive about at suburban speeds. Sniff the fluid. They say heat rises and oil vapors always result in a hideously chunked up oil filler cap. All 3 of my V70's needed to have their caps sit upright in 12mm of cleaner just to get the black junk off. However, mine have stayed clean. Ergo, I conclude, use a full synthetic and change it every 7,500 mi. max. If you use conventional oil, go with a 5,000 mile OCI. Turbocharged engine ? Always synthetic. Re PCV system: Oil vapors huffing out of dipstick tube or oil filler neck means the PCV isn't working. The crankcase's pressure isn't being vented. The rubber glove test is fairly universal. See if the front strut hardware sticks up from the strut pocket evenly. One which has given up the ghost will be higher. However, that is not a complete test of front end hardware. Are you looking for someone or are you planning a driving vacation in No. America? |
