Default Economy XC70 D5 185 Geartronic

There are thousands of threads on MPG for the D5 but I genuinely have a headache reading through them.

As a quick runround, who has experience of the D5 185 geartronic in an XC70 and what was MPG like.

I have had mine just over a month. Full service history, all fluids clean and new and its clearly been well looked after and on 49K miles.

Over the past 1000miles Iv'e not seen 27mpg mixed driving, motorway/town.
trip computor is 28.7 but my calculations are lower.

Reading other threads, some with 185 D5 seem to get anything between 32 + 38 mixed driving.

No stored faults, checked by VIDA and runs, pulls very well. Any ideas if there's something I should look at or check. If that's all it'll do, then so be it. It wasn't bought for economy but just concerned if there's something up and I should be getting more.

Thanks,

Terry

I have the V70 D5 185 Geartronic and I'm getting around 32mpg (my calculations) mixed driving (35mpg on the OBC) so what you're getting sounds about right to me considering the difference in the vehicle design. My car is also well maintained and running well.

Same car, engine combination. 135K miles.

I get 34-36mpg average (work commute on A roads at 40-60mph). 40mpg on motorway @ 65mph, 34mpg @ 80mph and mid-high 20's in town.

Town driving is the killer. Once its moving and steady the mpg climbs quickly.

Don't forget to shave off around 10% for AWD cars.

A healthy 185 D5 AWD XC70 Auto will do around 33 mpg on the motorway, i.r.o. 28 for 50/50 mix.

Tyres are a factor too - heavier 4x4 and winter tyres can shave 5-10% as well.

I really don't know why it's so poor - my 2008 XC70 does 1-2 mpg LESS than my 2003 XC90 in the same driving. My dads 2013 XC70 (215 - twin turbo) does much better - over 40 on a good run.

Good economy on those 215/220 last XC70 D5s. Just too much money!

I based my choice on average return of : -

185 D5 @ 34mpg
205 D5 @ 37mpg
215/220 D5 @ 41mpg

Spending the extra for a 215/220 would take along time to payback the additional £10K purchase price. Guess the sweet spot for cost/economy is a 205.

I recall that my 2008 185D5 XC70 typically showed in the region of 32-33 mpg (mix of A roads, country, town and Mway), when fully loaded (4up, luggage and luggage) on a long haul steady 75-80mph Mway trip it could do 37mpg.
my current 2012 215HP iit shows around 35mpg typically (alot less if i drive 'spiritedly' and 38ish on a long trip - never got over 40mpg though.

Mine's around low 30s, depending on journey mix. Seems fairly typical as stated above. Definitely a bit less than my old '90 too! However, I knew this at time of purchase and it wasn't a major factor. I'll only be doing small annual miles anyway.

My mate's 2015 XC70 D5 geartronic.

533 mile motorway round trip @61mph average. 43.6mpg

Not likely to see these numbers in a 185, but then mine cost £5k and his cost north of £30K!!

Would love that dash though

I have a 2009 185 xc70 geartronic. Owned from new. Well maintained, tyres at the "eco" pressure. I regularly see 44-46 mpg.

Sitting just under 70 (cruise on 66mph) makes a HUGE difference. As soon as you go over 70mph she starts guzzling.

With the average speed cameras on the A9, I cruise 100 miles at 61mph - makes a great positive contribution to the average MPG.

Had that dash on my XC60 - it's very easy on the eyes. And a temperature gauge!!! Had one of those on my Allegro.....
