Over a period of around a fortnight prior to changing, I'd spend a couple of minutes each day lightly spraying the couplings with a penetrant (silicone). When the day came to changing the filter, they popped off fairly easily with very light fettling/tussling from a 15mm spanner (or whatever size it is!?!)

Sorry for delay in getting back to you, the notification went astray.

Thanks for that info, great idea but unfortunately time was not on my side. My fuel filter suddenly started weeping due to a small area that was in contact with the retaining strap that had rusted badly. It only wept when pressurised but obviously had to be changed immediately.

I did remove the tight fitting in the end by small prying movements using a small bar and working all around the fitting. It creaked as it shifted a tiny amount each time until it came off.

Glad to say both fitting sealed again although I was apprehensive about one sealing as it had previously been mullered by some heathen.

Glad you sorted it! As a matter of course, I still spray the couplings and filter once a month and twizzle the connectors. Helps to keep it supple and free.

I like to hear it. I do these sort of thing but often only after I have experienced problems because these things had not been done.
I have an Isuzu Trooper and had a hell of a job removing glow plugs that had been in there for several years. I made the mistake of leaving them unattended until one or more failed. Now I remove them once a year, check, clean and replace is necessary. It is an arse of a job but nowhere near as bad as having to replace the cylinder head.
