Default Upper engine mount bush - which way round?

V70 T5 1998

Replacing the top engine mount bush (confident, eh?)

The bush has an arrow on each side indicating which way is up. Obviously this is to ensure that its asymmetric design is installed correctly: firstly, the hole isn't in the centre, and secondly, the bush has a fatter lump to the left of the upwardly-pointing arrow (whichever side you look at) - see pic.

I haven't been able to find out which way it (the side with an upwardly pointing arrow) should face: towards the timing belt side of the engine, or towards the distributor side?

I found one set of instructions which (rather unhelpfully) said it should face "the driver's side". I assume that's in the USA, but I'm in the UK...

So, how about this: does the fat lump go towards the bulkhead, or towards the radiator?

(I assume it's fat lump goes towards the radiator, 'cos it has to take the forward momentum of the engine when braking, or hitting something.)

Ta.

Thank you for that. The link is in fact to an article for a different fitting. There may be similarities, but there's no mention of there being a correct position for this particular bush within its mount.

I've attached a photo of my car's version. There are various online articles about this type, and a YouTube video or several, but I haven't found anything which makes it definitively clear which way round to fit this bush.

I know I could inspect the old bush, but I can't be 100% certain that it was fitted correctly...

I just noticed that on the aforementioned "driver's side" web page, the article kicks off by mentioning that the mount is "easily spotted at the top of the engine a bit to the driver’s side (North American)".

So when it says "The bushing must be inserted so that the arrows are (should surely be 'arrow is') on the driver side and pointing up", that would indeed position the fat lump towards the radiator.

A reader is quoted there as suggesting "When you fit the new mount rotate the top forward about 15 degrees as this takes some of the ‘shear’ out of the thrust and the mount will last much longer. I still have an OEM mount in and it is about 6 years old." I may try that. Watch this space (for about 6 years ).

All done.

And because my local Volvo indie garage was shut (Covid-19-era), with no press tool I could find to hire or buy in the UK (could get one for about £100 plus a longish wait from the USA), I made a simple tool from readily-available materials for about £20, that worked.

Description and photos here (on this forum).
