So...as Cookeh says...you need to release the five retaining tabs simultaneously from underneath.

The tool does this by splaying the tabs outward whilst pulling to tool upwards.

Simple with the correct tool...nightmare without.

Here goes with the update chaps

Trimmer says he can refurb the knob but it requires hide 0.8mm thick

I want to get a bit retro in the cockpit so would like a deep orange. He does not have any, will cost £240 a sheet, so if anybody is able to assist via a recco or otherwise I should be extremely grateful

In the meantime another knob request placed in want section in case puller does not get it off in one piece

Puller should arrive in about a week and available for hire - I don't think tenner a pop is unreasonable nor likely to be asked for xxxx

Thank you for making sense of my mumbo jumbo! Any chance you could measure the distance between the base of the knob and those clips? Would he useful to know in the design of a DIY piece.

About an 1" or 25mm from tabs to base.

Standard 850 gear knob P/N 6814305 acquired from Skandix but now discontinued methinks. P/N 9176166 is available and looks identical although I'm not sure what the difference is. It might actually be grey in colour.

Chaps

Anybody have a recco for orange hide 0.8mm thick or less

My uk hunt has proved fruitless but on the upside, save screwing up the lower fuel line bolt PCV is done using Proparts upgraded kit. Certainly looks the part though one end of the inlet section has a fitting which in my view is not for a P1 or 850 so those dreadful single use steel clips pulled off and clipped onto inlet with jubbly clip

Purrs well on stands and only small amount of dipstick fumes when revved at full temp, latex glove on filler cap flat as a mill pond. Happy days, refurbed Comets with eagle assy 5's due for collection today. Even happier days !

Try Bielawskis Sheffield Trimming Co - they do an awful lot of custom work and were very reasonable price wise when I got my seat retrimmed.
