RE: 850R test drive
Hello Kiwi Mark,
I was in Auckland three years ago and found a non Franchise dealer, Ovlov in Barrys Point Road, Takapuna, run by a Yorkshireman, Derek Clough, got to be a Yorky with that surname....he had some good stock and knew the cars very well. He may remember me as a bald Englishman who came in when he was watching cricket on his TV late one afternoon. Don.Norchi. www.kalmar-union.com TME engineered software UK distributor. |

RE: 850R test drive
Sorry folks, I don't mean to hi-jack this thread, but 120 mph in third - is that not well into the red? My experience of x70s is that they start to hit the red line about 90-100mph.

No, you can't over-rev an auto, unless you're deliberately holding a gear. I'm sure the spec in the handbook supports this - I'll look it up.

RE: 850R test drive
Typical, I can't find it now. On further consideration it is probably the torque converter lock-up coming in at 120mph. But with regard to the original question, the box will happily kick-down at over 60mph.
I'm sure someone out there has the data for min/max speeds for the auto box.

RE: 850R test drive
hi don,
kiwi mark!! how dare you! ha ha! i am an ex-pat and have been living here for 12 years now, so i'm almost a kiwi. i am familiar with Ovlov, it's right by the takapuna golf driving range which i frequent. didn't know it was run by a yorkshire man, thats reassuring. i will pop in and see derek. sounds like a good alternative as scandinavian motors here have been big kahunas on everything i have asked them about. many thanks |

RE: 850R test drive
In any case, there is a rev limiter that will stop you destroying the engine. In mine, you should be able to kick down twice to 1st at speeds of less than 50kph, and down to 2nd at speeds of less than about 100ish kph. Expect a firm kick in the back of the head when this happens (lovely!). Curiously enough, in economy mode during deceleration, when you get down to 50 kph or so, 1st gear engages. In sport this doesn't happen, and 2nd stays chosen until much slower. Winter mode causes you to pull away in 3rd to avoid wheel spin when in D.
I am just jealous that I have a simple T5 and you will have an R! Richard Whennell 855 T5 1995 VOC member |

RE: 850R test drive
An 850R should kick-down happily over 100 mph. (160kph?)
But the car in front will apear very quickly!! BJ 850R |
