Default Transmission Service Required 002F (Lock Up function Slippin

Hello,

After a long reading and searching the net and different forums I would like to hear some suggestions about the problem I have with my transmission on an AWD D5 2005 XC90 with automatic gearbox with geartronic.

The problem started with torque converter shudder. When driving in 4th or 5th gear and when slowly accelerating between 80-90km/h.
I found the known issue (technical bulletin) “SOME VEHICLES MAY SET A 002F CODE OR HAVE A SLIPPING / SHUDDERING (IN 4TH AND/OR 5TH GEAR) TORQUE CONVERTER” known in 2003 January under number Service Bulletin Number: 43006 in USA

I discussed about this article with my dealer but unfortunately they didn’t hear about this issue and they didn’t found anything under this reference number here in Europe. I phoned the national Volvo customer service but they told me not to believe the things I read on the internet.
I asked for a transmission oil flush and they did partially drain and fill the transmission with new oil. They said that the oil looked bad and they changed about 4 liter of the 7,6 liter in total.

Afterwards unfortunately the shudder remained and suddenly when driving
about half an hour on motorway at 2500-3000 rpm I got the transmission service required error. Turned out to be the 002F fault code (Transmission Service Required 002F (Lock Up function Slipping or not engage). The dealer told me I need a new transmission.
Did some 1500 km since then and I can say the error only happens when driving in 5th gear for minimum more than 30 minutes at 2500-3000rpm. When driving on countryside and city (fluctuating speeds), the error never happens.

I went to the dealer and asked about the adaptation parameters, they didn’t reset them after the transmission oil change. Because the transmission is a self learning system I asked to reset the old values of the degraded oil. They did 2 resets of counters. They did not do the complete reset with 1,5 hour test drive because it is useless. They say all my efforts are useless and I simply need a complete new transmission.

Once you get the error while driving on motorway it goes in limp mode. When you slow down you feel a soft clonk and then it gets stuck in 4th gear. When you stop the car and restart, transmission is working again. But when continuing on the motorway the error quickly returns. Except when you put it on cruise control, the error never happens.

Any ideas about how to fix the problem? Should I continue with the full adaptation procedure with test drive? I cannot say it shifts bad or i hear strange noises from the transmission.

Thanks in advance!

Thumbs down

I had much the same problem but use my car for towing a caravan and even after a full gearbox oil change £360 plus gearbox reprograming £90 I ended up having a complete new geartronic box £4,000 plus but it really depends on if you tow or not as this is appears to do the damage (5 Speed box 2004 XC90)

Thanks for feedback! I ended up paying the same amounts but then in euro.
But I feel you have to take these steps in order to better understand the nature of this problem. TCM-002F means that there is a deviation of more than 100rpm for more than 12sec between the torque converter input speed (engine speed RPM) and the transmission speed after the torque converter.
despite lock-up being activated.

I am first owner and car is never used for towing. From day 1, engine was however tuned tot 198bhp instead of original 163bhp by volvo dealer. Car is fully serviced at correct maintenance intervals at official dealer. I am just disappointed by the lack of effort they put in it. I cannot accept easily that the transmission is gone after 100k miles or 160k km. Recently my turbo was blown and has been replaced. Thinking about taking it to a specialist repair shop although dealer says it is useless to repair it.

there was as software upgrade years ago for this, basically it increases pressure for lock up due to wear.

if this upgrade does not help a new box is required.

thanks alot!! I will discuss this today with the dealer, I hope they find this back in their online VADIS archives. If they don't find the software upgrade, I will ask them to contact national Volvo technical helpdesk to discuss this. They probably performed the standard tcm software upgrade but I can imagine this specific update you mention is only on special request and is not included in the standard TCM software upgrade wizard since it is due to wear of the transmission. thanks again!

Bad news, dealer says this update is by default applied in the latest TCM software update. Hard to believe since it fixes a problem due to wear and shouldn't be applied to all transmissions in my opinion. Is there a reference number for this presurre increase update that I can refer to? Maybe it is best to visit another dealer and ask about the update in terms of getting a 2nd opinion? I will keep you updated.

the update I mentioned was a few years ago,Volvo regularly update the software so the latest has covered this and possibly a few other tweaks.

as somebody else has mentioned a new box was required, looks like yours requires new also.

Default TCM-002F Code

I know this is a pretty old thread but here is an interesting quirk to this TCM-002F DTC.
I got the same code on my 2004 XC90 T5 AWD. I thought maybe the inline solenoids might be bad so I changed them before springing for a reman or used tranny.
Two different transmission guys have told me if the fluid is clean and the solenoid s are good I need a new transmission.
However, unlike Spiderman's problem mine is the following:
If I leave the house and drive a couple of miles the car goes into limp mode. Seems to drive OK in all gears, just stays in limp mode unless I stop, turn engine off, and restart.
But...when I leave the house, if I click on cruise control as soon as I get to 35 MPH, the car never goes into limp mode. Even when stopping at red lights or stop signs, or slowing down for slow cars ahead of me, if I hit the resume button and get back up to cruise control minimum speed, it operates fine and doesn't go into limp mode!
I am thinking the transmission is good and there is some kind of electrical or electronic problem. A bad or shorted connection somewhere? I just don't know where to start looking to track that down. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!
Thanks,
Dave

Nightmare, it looks like it is definitely an electrical problem. Any other strange behaviour?
