I too am also guilty of over-generalisation...

I am sure the Taxis in Japan (over 200K of them) must run ok on LPG, same as there must be a few Audis that don't spend all the time in the dealers.

I hope my Jeep behaves when I get that back on the road, it seems to run OK on gas at the moment.

Quite right.

You did, however, say "not one ever worked properly", indicating that you have never been in one that worked properly. Which is unfortunate, but not indicative of all LPG converted cars, fortunately.

I have been in many which don’t work. Principally it was an eml problem which is now an MOT failure despite others on this thread saying it is not.

The op needs to be aware that often they will have issues.

Do understand right, that LPG conversions are sometimes causing the car's "normal/petrol" check engine light to come on. I can see why that would be a big problem, come MOT time.

Is a check engine light on the LPG system a failure also, even if the car's original is not on?

Yes it is, look at the previous pages here and I have posted link to official MOT regs, was updated few months ago and in light of this I would not LPG as it’s not really worth it.

I seem to be the only person posting facts here rather than old wives tales...

Hi XC90mk1.
Why is an LPG system not worth it?
Do you mean from a problem/running issue, or cost of the install = fuel savings cost?
My car is the V8 4.4 and has a Prins system installed when I bought it.
To date I have had no issues, especially when considering the cost of LPG over petrol.
The system is faultless, changes to LPG when engine hits temperature and switches back to petrol when LPG tank is depleted with a warning beep.
The EM light came on once when I was really accelerating hard to the max of the gearbox, it also went out on its own after a few miles of normal driving.
So I for one can't complain, then again I didn't have the cost of the install but I have the benefits of cheaper running costs.

I have been in Range Rovers (several), omega, Passat and several other cars with LPG, the main issue is that I believe (not joking) that they would ALL have the EML on frequently which is now an MOT failure.

The rAnge rovers in particular had pretty much no boot left and you could not fold the seats due to the massive tanks in the boot with gauge and pipe work all in the cabin with the passengers which I really thought looked rubbish and I wouldn’t want.

Leaks and install problems/misfire.

The donut tanks seemed to fit the wheel well ok but offered app Awfull Range.

I have no axe to grind or motive here, all I can do it pass on my experience if leaks, poor running, constant management light. The OP is looking at fitting this to a modern vehicle and frankly I think that unless EVERY part of the installation is perfect there will be problems.

On a seperate not lpg offers poor lubrication and high running temperatures. I wonder how your valve seats look compared to a petrol and how much you would have saved if you paid for the install?

Fair points.
I personally wouldn't have paid for the install as £2000 goes a long way in petrol.
I do a low 4-5k a year so wouldn't have been a viable purchase, in a way of recouping my investment.
Not being mechanically minded, didn't know it could damage the valve seats!!!!
My car has only done 87k but, from what I have been told (and I have no reason to doubt) it was once owned by Prins, who used this as a demo car.
I do use petrol frequently as there is no LPG Garage nearby so have no option unless I want to travel around 30 mile round trip, which sort of defeats the object.
I have the doughnut tank slung under floor where the spare wheel fits so no loss of space or ugly install.
We are moving on Thursday and there is a Flogas depot around two miles away and there LPG is 0.52p per litre, so would be a considerable saving on petrol.
Thanks for your reply.
