Smile Fob and starting issue

'98 T5 manual with simultaneous symptoms:
1) Fob not working to set/unset alarm or to open central locking. Changed fob 2016 battery, but no effect.
2) Turn ignition, but no starter sound, and no signal measured on small wire going to the starter solenoid.

Temporary solution=bypass the starter relay!
So to start: bridge contacts 30 & 87 on the starter relay, causes the starter to turn, & at same time get someone to turn the ignition key, and engine starts!

1st thought is a dead starter relay (I've not the tools to test, so will just order replacement).
Ideally I'd test the low power starter contact of relay for a signal when key is turned, as possibly there is no start signal getting to the starter relay? (but my helper is part time!)

Can't help thinking the fob not working is ominous coincidence....
any thoughts pls?

with my car if you open the door with the key & start it up, it still starts without using the fob, so I'd imagine it's a coincidence.

Same issue described here:
http://www.matthewsvolvosite.com/for...hp?f=1&t=58730
I also noticed, late, that the filler cap and central locking not working.
Checked fuses, & #6 is blown.
Replaced, & fuse #6 blows each time the central locking mechanism tries to close.
Maybe this is corrosion slowing the locks, or something else? Time for more forum searching....
