You get a message on the dash and a red or orange light if the engine temperature does anything it shouldnt , which is more noticable than a needle which slowly creeps up ...
You have an electronic oil level gauge in the dash , AND a mecnanical dipstick on the edge of the sump .( for "service use " only really though ..) When is the last time you needed a spare wheel , 20 years ago? Yes it would be handy to have one i agree , even a space saver , but with phones and breakdown services these days i guess it is deemed un necessary , and on one version of the XC90 it makes the difference between one tax band and another , ie weight/fuel saving ..

Temp gauge: For years and years in many cars they have been rigged such that they show the same reading across quite a large temperature range, this means you have no way of knowing what the engine temperature actually is only that it's within an acceptable range. I don't see the issue with having a warning message instead, in fact it's more likely to draw your attention to a problem than a gauge going into the red which you might miss.
Dipstick: More and more common for cars to have an electronic oil level sensor rather than a dipstick. I don't see an issue with it, press a button to check the oil rather than pop the bonnet and look at an oily piece of metal - what's wrong with that? No spare wheel: Agreed, I don't like not having a spare but unfortunately that's the way the whole market is going. Unlike the other two queries IMO this one can really bite you in the ass. |

Did they not tell you these things when you bought it? Lots of cars dont have dip sticks or spare wheels now, and yes, it is rediculous, I'm with you on that one.

all this electronic as for oil dipstick is Bxxxxxxx, if this work like they do in trucks there will be many engine running on low oil, how many people actualy will press that button, and I would not belive what the car tell me on dash anyway, I'm young guy but old school when comes to things like that, less electronics less things to go wrong, volvo has many electronic fault so not sure why they bother with things like that, both most important thing coolant and oil and they go electronic

Assuming that both temperature and oil level have a warning that alerts you if there is a probable I think the reasons are
a) cost saving b) many people now have no idea how or why to check oil and temperature anyway Fact is for the average motorist the can is now somewhere between a fridge or a designer product - if it goes wrong call AA or garage but other wise I don't touch it 10 years from now you won't be able to open the bonnet..........great if its new - not so good if its a few years old. If you really want to fiddle best buys are now things like Hyundai and Kia where many cars are sold in markets where servicing is limited and they're not (yet) so non serviceable. |

If something that requires attention, such as the oil level, I'm more than happy to have a light tell me about it But, sorry, if the tyre goes wrecked, as does happen here in the Borders, I want a spare in the boot rather than an aerosol that will only fix certain punctures All those living in the heartlands of Notting Hill et all, fine they may get away with a fizzy can. 90 miles from anywhere in the Highlands, it's nonsense |
