2019 V60 Manual Gearbox
Hi all,
I currently drive a V40 that's now just over 10 years old and fancy a V60 for a bit more comfort and space. I had wanted an automatic, but I drove one as a hire car and it wasn't a great gearbox in some ways. Very smooth, but if you wanted to accelerate gently, it tended to do nothing so you'd press a bit harder and then it'd drop 2 gears and make a lot of noise. Manuals are also a couple of grand cheaper in the UK, and I think the fuel consumption is a little better too? Plus it seems like one less thing to go wrong. Has anyone got a manual gearbox V60? How is it? Many thanks, Richard |

I run a 2014 V70 D5 manual, and have always over 50 years of driving railed against an auto box. In 2023 I bought a V60 Hybrid - auto only option, and my first auto box. I have to admit its not as bad as I was expecting, and am now a bit of a convert, in as much as if there was a manual/auto option I would not instantly reject the auto.
Cheers Bob

I have a XC60 (2018.5MY) D4 manual. My guess is that it is the same manual gearbox that you would find in a 2019 V60.
I am happy with it. It was a few grand cheaper and I think it is more economical than the automatic equivalent. (I get just over 40mpg on average and can get 45mpg+ on long motorway journeys). We had other reasons for wanting a manual too. You asked "how is it?" and so my answer is that if you are happy with a manual then it does exactly what it needs to do and I have no complaints. Whether a manual is better or worse than an automatic is a whole different debate and question. And not one you asked!

I didn't think you could get a SPA platform car without an automatic?

V60s I have only ever seen as a D3 in manual in pretty basic spec. Even rarer is an XC60 manual but they are out there.
In Sweden you can have a V90 in manual if you want, the specs over here are dictated to us and not all that is available else where, tho it’s all sales isn’t it same goes for only selling SUV ect ect.

I love auto boxes saw the light early in 30s (over 15 years ago) when a nice 2006 BMW 330d came up at that time I was a stoic manual gear box advocate being young and naturally driving like a hooligan. Within a few weeks I realised, why did I ever want to change gear manually on a public road? Not had a manual since and never will again auto boxes are just better and in my view make driving a less stressful activity just cruising about enjoying the ride with very little to do. And of course modern auto boxes have the response when you need it to overtake plus return better economy (apparently).
If you pair the box with a paltry engine the experience will be awful but right combo and it's a pleasing experience try a few get something that suits you, however slush boxes do tend to spool up before launch just need to be prepared for that.

Manual gearbox in use generally well behaved but 1st gear is a bit low on its gearing, Can be annoying if you intend to get through the box quickly, Probably really good for if you are towing, ( Never Tried it) and is just a moving away gear. After that the box is smooth. 40 MPH you can select 5th gear and 6th comes in at 56 MPH in a D3 variant. The gear selector is a bit clunky when selecting gears, but you know that its home. |

I bought a 68 plate manual V60 D3 in December at 72k miles. I've put 10k miles on it so far, and I can tell you categorically that you should avoid the manual gearbox if at all possible. Mine is notchy and over spring-loaded, to the extent that I will be changing the car soon. I've spoken to an owner of a 2019 plate V60 and he reports the same thing. Its a shame, because the gearchange spoils a generally good car. |

I have a '68 plate D4 Momentum with a manual gearbox - purchased in January 2019 after being a 'Managers' car at the dealership for the first 4 months of it's life. I find the gearbox pretty good, as good as the '07 Mondeo Titanium X I drove before - imho.
I don't know anything about the box really, it has occasionally worried me that it may be pretty rare and so could be an issue if problems develop. I know it was hard to find a manual box V60 for sale - although to be fair it was only a few months into the life of the model when I was looking. Last edited by Rod1883; May 16th, 2024 at 13:24. |

I had a v60 D4 Inscription manual 19 plate, just to prove the point that they're not all low spec.
I found the gearbox very smooth and not at all notchy. I do a lot of miles and when I changed it last year at 4 years old it had done 105k, box felt exactly as new. Replaced it with a mild hybrid v60 with the dual clutch auto, now that is a good gearbox on the move but terrible from rest if you need to get away quickly - I'm also rather wary as to it's long term reliability because it's already behaving rather strangely in reverse some days. I'd go back to a manual tomorrow if they were still made.
