Default Throttle body internal fault?

My 2001 V70 XC 2.4T sometimes shows a reduced performance message. This quickly clears upon startup and doesn't seem to be causing any issues to the car as yet. Still plenty of punch and no performance issues that I can see.... However, I have scanned the car and it comes up as throttle body internal fault. Upon erasing the message it won't come back for about 2 or 3 weeks.

My question is, what's the best or easiest way to resolve this?

Does a second hand part need to be programmed to the car or is it plug and play?

What would you do?

Any advice would be appreciated.

Cheers

Your car has the MM design ETM.
In it there is a mylar strip from which the oxide layer has worn -think shedded audio tape.
Replacing your old ETM at a dealership will get you a new, old style ETM.
People go to automotive subassembly rebuild shops for these things. The tech available today is superior. Xemodex is one company on this side of the Atlantic. There are such shops over there.

These ETMs are programmed to the car and are not plug and play.
People tell stories about buying 6 of them at various breakers to find one which works etc but it's all bull if you ask me.

Send yours off for the rebuild and reinstall it.

Thanks for the reply. Guess a rebuild is in order at some point then. Its not really causing a problem per se but something to definitely keep an eye on.

Cleaning it will have no effect then?

When it's rebuilt, will be be contatless then?

Many thanks

Also look closely at the wires going into the connector

Ridding an old P2 of the MM ETM is a knee jerk reaction.

Your symptom might be caused by a dirty throttle plate. Absolutely go ahead and clean it. You've nothing to lose.

One common (not universal) symptom of the worn ETM is abrupt rpm fluctuations aka hunting.

Many people report cleaning their ETM without improvement, only to have it successfully rebuilt. It would be great if your ETM cleaned up and restored performance.

The blurb I read said the Xemodex rebuilds are contactless. Make sure to ask that of any rebuilder you use.

And as said above, do check your wiring. Also check any vacuum hoses for looseness and splits. Your car is 20.
