How to revive 940 diesel
I have been given a 940 diesel. It has been left for 4 years unstarted. J reg 92. It will not start. I put in a new battery, no luck. I drained water out of fuel filter, still nothing. It turns over. It is automatic, in park, handbrake on.
I don't have any knowledge of diesels. Is there anything obvious I can try? Any help would be most welcome. Thank you TB |

A small puff of "easy start"
just give it a whiff and see if it jumps into life!, just a smal whiff though you dont want ti lift the head off the thing!

Thanks for the comments. The heating light comes and I wait for that to go out before trying. The fuses are ok. Can I test the glow plugs like spark plugs?
I am a little scared of the easy start as I read it could crack the rings. I will try a small dose of that tomorrow. Thank you for the advise, sorry for my ignorance, but I am happy to learn anything you can tell me. |

How did you get on with the glow plug test?
If you've not got a test light you can use a voltmeter, having removed gplugs, though I suppose it would work in situ testing between threaded end and engine block. Anything over 0.2 ohm is bad as far as I recall (my meter has gone missing). If you are still not sure extract plugs and using 2 wires connect the threaded end of the plug to the positive terminal of a battery and the body to the negative and the plug should indeed glow. If the gplugs are ok, you could check to see that there is fuel getting to the injectors by partially undoing the connections, one at a time, until you can see a dribble escaping on cranking. Unscrew the fuel filter to see that it is full first and be careful undoing the nuts as the pipes are easily damaged... If fuel is present and plugs work, get hold of a working relay (search ebay for 940 diesel parts) and replace yours. Do a forum search as well 'diesel starting problem' 940 diesel hard to start' and anything similar you can think of. Any previous info on the car or why it was left unused? jor

Thanks again for such fast responses. I had a look with a more technical friend this evening and he has noticed no fuel coming from tank. We have found the pump and it makes no noise, should it be ticking or whirring or something noticeable? so he suggested I should get this checked first and then I'll check the plugs once I have fuel going through. I feel I should have spare stuff ready as the whole assembly looks a little rusty and the big 6" plastic nut looks like it has been damaged as it is held on with a massive jubilee clip. It looks a fiddle to get it out, should I be looking for a new pump, or are they serviceable? Thanks again for all the help and I am encouraged that no-one is laughing at me trying to revive an 18 year old car.
