C30 alternator upgrade questions
Hi all, I've been a long time lurker and appreciate the forum massively.
I'll try to keep this concise - I need to replace the alternator on my c30 2.0. I ordered the 150amp version as I am aware that it is considered an upgrade to my 120amp variant especially considering the car has heated seats. I am also aware that the car will need a software update after I fit the 150amp alternator. I called up Paul Rigby Volvo today to get a quick guide price but they said that they need the specific module number to give me an estimate and any more information. My questions - How detrimental is it for me to drive with the 150amp without the upgrade? (the dealer is 15 miles away) How would I go about getting this module number? I have a Vida clone unit all set up, could I get the info they're after from there? Thanks |

You'd do better to keep everything standard rather than fitting an unnecessary "upgrade" as the alternator fitted to the car has already taken into account the requirements of the electrical components installed.
Put on full electrical load then stick a current clamp on a 120A alternator and you'll see that its actual output is nowhere near its capacity. Fitting a new part without the required software is like connecting a new part to a PC but not bothering to install the drivers so if you insist on fitting the unnecessary part, at least follow the procedure laid out in Vida and do it right. The project will yield zero practical benefits though.
