Default Vocal V70

Hello, I wonder if anyone here has had a similar vocal V70.

2.0D Started to whine going up the gears, ( Shortly after its service at Volvo) a little research makes me think my alternator is giving me a pre warning that its on its way out ( Volvo of course being HOPELESS blamed it on software update, which they blame absalutly everything on)

So primed in the thought that its the alternator I have my indi prepped, but today as I was parking while I was on full lock the V70 became very vocal ( Unusual as it was normally only whining going through the gears and inaudible at idle) and then for a split second while reversing the stearing for a second got heavy ( Like my old 740 ) and then came back to life.

As I said my V70 is booked in at my Indi but if anyone has any thoughts that could point them in the correct direction it would be appreciated. ( I would rather cut off my own hands than go back to Volvo )

Thanks in advance!

I wonder if it could be a power-steering related issue. Have you checked the level and colour of the fluid?

Plus one for checking the power steering and the belt. If belt is ok check fluid .It may be cavitation in the pump caused by air leak due to low oil or a blocked filter . If its the filter then check the fluid for metal particles . If they are present then you may have big trouble brewing .Known Volvo failing .If no metal in oil then its possibly a simple cure . My first V70 Mk 1 had a noisy power steering pump , new fluid did not cure it so drained some out and added some "Slick 50" PS fluid . It cured the noise instantly and went on for another 5 years with no problems . I now dose all my PS with it and all seems fine . Hope its the easy fix .

It is funny, someone else asked about a whining noise on their S80 yesterday but they were not as polite as yourself. I suspect you will get more help.

(I am sure Pierre will know the post, he gave a very funny response)

Coming back to the topic, as you think that the noise started after a service; has the mechanic left something within the airbox/air intake ducting or even mis-aligned the air filter which will cause whistling as you accelerate.

But also agree that both the PS pump and alternator bearings are common causes when you scour both the V70 and V50 forums

Hello everyone.

Thank you so very much for all your helpful comments, I will be investigating on Friday.

And then if I am still confused I shall have coffee with my latest copy of the VOC magazine and contemplate my up coming bill.

I will keep the post updated for future reference for anyone that has similar issues in the future.

Smile Found the whine!

Well, after many visits to indi garages, as well as attempting to see volvo specialists I finally gave in and put my V70 into my Volvo dealer.

They previously had no idea however it had gotten worse and it was traced to power steering!

1st fix was a new tank 2nd fix new power steering pump and just as I was contemplating this news I glanced out the window and in a sea of Volvo's I spotted a XC70 D5 AWD in black that is less than 10k and just a year old.

So I purchased that one and traded in the V70.

But a it may be of use to someone in the future, the A/C also JUST started making very odd noises sounding like a cat purring loudly and then the cooling gave up entirely so I think it was the purrfect time to trade up.

Thanks again everyone!
