I'm neither of those two but you need a T60 and never use a spanner.

From memory I think it's a 55. It's easier with the timing belt cover removed.
You could bring the alternator to an auto electrical repair shop. It's probably bearings which are pretty much standard and they will at the same time clean the comm and brushes and check out the regulator pack. That's what mine got at 150k. Looked new coming back. |

Thanks cheshired5 for the info. Brendan can you remember roughly what you paid. I don't want to get fleeced and in Dublin that is what they tend to do.

Fifty Yoyos for bearings and a clean up and health check of the other bits including freewheel pulley.

Right, Back again on this. Upon further investigation and cleaning my ears and actually opening my eyes, it is the A/C. I was looking under the bonnet and sure as hell the A/C clutch was not engaging, turned on the A/C and it was not engaging. then I noticed one of the electrical connectors, the round tube like one was disconnected and taped to the power steering with black tape. I reconnected it and the when I turned on the Engine and the A/C the noise instantly got louder. but the clutch engaged. And there was no change in the coldness of the air coming into the cabin so I assume the pump is empty. We have found the culprit. So firstly let me apologise to Brendan and D5meister for not taking the advice and looking at the A/C straight away. So my question is where do I go from here? Do you reckon it is an A/C clutch and if so can it be repaired easily or would I be better getting one from a scrappy. I have only owned this car 5 days and have had to lift the bonnet more times than I had to do in 5 years of Honda ownership. Not to mention already having to spend money I was not expecting to on the car so soon. To quote Arrested Development " I've made a huge mistake" in coming back to Volvo. Or is this as bad and as costly as I think it may be?

If the gas is gone the car should prevent the clutch pulling in. Assuming this is still the case and there is gas in there, there are a number of possible scenarios.
The clutch is worn and the bearing is failing. This would make noise in freewheel mode with the a/c off and because the clutch is worn it is slipping on the compressor so it's freewheel bearing still makes noise with the a/c on. When the clutch pulls in does the compressor actually spin. The cure is a bearing replacement and removal of a shim or two. It can be done in situ. http://www.volvoforums.org.uk/showthread.php?t=220277 The clutch bearing is rough but the clutch gap is in spec and the compressor is seizing. This would make noise both on and off and the best option is probably a used or recon compressor unit complete. Last edited by Brendan W; Sep 17th, 2015 at 19:12. |

I had a 53 D5 that had a similar whine. After chasing the aux belt and changing the alternator bearings (made no difference) we diagnosed the aircon clutch bearing. Most people suggested a very expensive option involving a new pump.
I went to an aircon specialist in Braintree, Essex, who changed the bearing in the clutch and all was well for ever after. Charles |

Hi Brendan, Thanks for the information. Can I ask where did you get a bearing kit for the A/C?

Thanks guys. |

300938758309 This is the bearing for the clutch posted by D5meister in the other thread. I'm not sure the one I got was exactly the same. I got it at the local bearing shop. It is used for some job on a Quad. I paid about 55 Euro, D5m got his for a lot less on ebay. I saw a few cheap offers there as well, they looked too cheap. No seals are required for the clutch job. I have no experience opening the compressor. How are the diagnoses going ? |
