I wrote a reply yesterday but I cant of sent it?

Was going to say, one option is an Idler pulley on a bracket as a compressor replacement. If you can live without it. I saw them somewhere online.

You could then get the Aircon compressor refurbed or search for a rplacement at your leisure and still use the car.

When swap it back to A/C - flog the full kit for like £45 after 3weeks of light use!!

Thats actually a great idea but ill probably just order the bearing and get it sorted. Its almost the same price as a compressor from a scrappy. Brilliant idea though. never seen anything like it.

Hi Brendan/Everybody

Just used D5meister's link a few posts down. it was 26 including postage from some crowd in Portlaois so hopefully it does the trick. The noise is 100% coming from the A/C Compressor. although now I have another issue. I took it on a long drive yesterday and about half way home the Cooling fan kicked in full tilt and did not stop. There was no increase on the temp of the engine. Turned the car on this morning to drop the kids to school and the fan came on full tilt with the engine from cold and did not stop. Any ideas anyone? I'm going to have a quick look on the forum now but while I was typing this I though I would throw it in.

Thanks for all the help again guys.

For the fan issue, start by resistance testing the coolant temp sensor.

Thanks Cheshired5, May I ask where is the coolant temp sensor? I've also been looking at another thread and they are saying that if the A/C compressor i slow on gas this can cause the fan to run constantly. Never heard of that before but if that is the case it may be linked to my A/C problem.

Sounds odd that low gas would put fan on full blast. Generally the expected response is to shut down the a/c entirely. Some cars will put the fan on cold at idle if the a/c is on to help the condensor but at a reduced speed.
Full blast fan could be either the car has lost sight of the temp sensor or is getting incorrect readings from it and has gone into full safe mode or the fan control module has developed an internal problem. Quite a number of cars around 02/03 were affected and there was a recall for some iirc. A key feature of the latter problem was the fan running on after shutdown and draining the battery flat.

I also thought it sounded odd. I am thinking the temp sensor or the fan module. it shuts down when the engine is shut down, well it shuts down about 30 seconds after the engine shuts sown. My car is a late 2004 but I believe its the 2005 model year as its the facelift one.

Follow the radiator top hose to where it joins the engine and there is a small (usually) grey plug with two wires coming out.
Unclip and unplug and the sensor is screwed in to the thermostat housing.
No need to remove. You can resistance test the contacts in situ.
