XC70 D5 185 2005 - random cut-out
First post, so "Hi all" - great forum that has helped me a lot.
I have a 2005 XC70 SE D5 185bhp manual 130k miles, and have owned it just over a year / 15k miles. Generally a great car and I'm very happy with it. Ever since I've had the car, it has occasionally/randomly completely cut-out - the engine just dies. It happens when I'm slowing down to 15mph or so, typically on approach to a T junction where I'm intending to stop, or when I'm turning into the T (as happened 30 mins ago and prompted this post). It does it once or twice a month, so maybe once every ~800 miles. It always starts again immediately and runs just fine again. There may be a tendency for it to happen more often in the early part of a journey, before full warm-up, though it definitely has happened when fully warmed. I had wondered if I might be stalling it. I have carelessly left it in too high a gear a few times as I'd slowed and had some juddering as the revs dropped too low. I'm now certain that is not the issue. It can be unnerving as it has stranded me halfway across a carriageway mid-turn - with no power and minimal brakes/steering. I'm always hastily getting it going again so haven't paid close attention to any messages / dash lights, etc. but I'm pretty sure there are no messages (none are stored). I'm sure the steering lock also activated in the most recent incident. I'm not sure if I've noticed that before but, as mentioned, I'm frequently in an awkward position and all my attention is on getting going again. I don't have a VIDA tool - now may be the time . . . Any thoughts appreciated. |
