Default Advice on Mileage and Age

Hello,

I'm in the market for a V70 or XC70 (R-Design) and am new to Volvo.
I only have a certain budget so can't buy new or from the last few years.
Can people please help with advice on mileage and age?

Is there a limit of mileage should I try and avoid? E.g. Don't buy over 150,000 miles etc.

How many miles (before the engine goes) can you get out of the V70 and XC70 if serviced annually?

What sort of age should I be avoiding? E.g Avoid anything 12 years or older.

How long do the bodies, chassis and general components last before they start to go?

After how many miles/years will the cam belt/water pump need replacing?

Many thanks for your help.

Engines don't "go" :-) mileage makes little difference .

just buy what you can afford , you won't be disappointed if you buy from a reputable outlet .

who knows , 25 , 40 years ? Most are galvanised from the mid 90's onwards
very rare you find a body "gone"

Cambelt intervals depend on the engine , but usually 108000 or 10 years which ever comes first . No you will not need a water pump with it . Unless it is the Ford 1.6 diesel , but if they do leak it is only a small leak and never known one fall apart yet .

Many thanks for your help.

Thanks very much! That's very helpful and reassuring. Having not owned one, I don't know about the quality other than what I've been told so far so I do appreciate people's help.

My advice is buy petrol not diesel. The 2005 2.5T models are nice (some extra oomph) and lower tax.

I would prefer petrol but I'm yet to see one through a lot of searching.

Here's one the same as ours but ours is lower mileage. I wouldn't pay any more than £1500 for this one provided the engine and gearbox are OK but you'd be getting a lot of car for this.

Well yes the petrol engines are thirsty but reliable. We don't do many miles though but we do live in central London and older diesels don't pass the ULEZ zone (the 2005 petrol is OK) and also you get stung more for parking permits.

Also, I don't like diesels. Never had one, never will.

The OP lives in Yorkshire, not London.

Re not liking diesels, you really don’t know what you’re missing if you’ve never had one.

To the OP - you mentioned R-design - that’s on the later cars, not the 2000 - 2007 P2’s.

Do your research on here, look for one that’s been well maintained and you’re unlikely to have many regrets. Before I bought my XC70 I found a 2002 V70 D5 for £800. It had full service history and had 8 cam belt changes. Just over 800,000 miles on the original engine. One clutch, same gearbox.

The 2008-up V70/XC70 had a few issues such as a cabin blower going commonly bad and requiring almost half the dash board removed and a specially puller tool. These cars require replacing parts after 100000 miles and even before, so on top of the price, have a few grands ready for maintenance and repairs. It is good to order parts online, even aftermarket brands like Sachs, Lemforder, Bosch etc At 100000 miles some engines will also need a new belt kit

I would look for something newer than 2010, first production years of a new model have glitches
