2.4D to D5 upgrade
I’m looking for a replacement V70 as my 52 plate D5 has just expired. My question is if I was to by a car badged as a 2.4D ie the lower output version, can it be easily upgraded to D5 spec?
I know essentially it’s the same engine but is it just a case of a software update in the ECM or is there more to it? |

I have a D5 185bhp 2006 V70 and my son has a 2003/4 S60 2.4D (although badged as a D5 as they were then) with the 163bhp engine.
My D5 has swirl flaps and DPF and a completley different inlet and injectors (probably loads more sensors, etc.). The ECU is in a different place and different type. I don't think it as simple as swapping the injectors and honestly the fuel consumption isn't that spectacular in a D5 185 with mid to high 30MPGs as compared to 45-50mpg in the 163. It's quicker but they are all limited to a max of 133MPH. Personally not worth the effort in my eyes. SC |

I assume you mean the euro 4 variant?
It can be software tuned I believe to somewhere around 200bhp by one of the reputable tuning companies. I’ve no experience personally, just read about it in the past. |

Ah right so a car badged 2.4D is the same output as my old 52 plate D5 & the newer ones badged as D5 are 185. I was concerned if I bought a 2.4D it wouldn’t have as much grunt as my old one

polestar upgrade takes it past the normal power of the D5 but you know its right as its from Volvo.
https://engineered.polestar.com/intl...modelYearId=58 Personally i'm a fan of the Polestar tune, it makes it driver a little nicer, upgrading the 2.4D is more of a difference as it takes it 163 > 205 and the torque has a huge nearly 30% increase all completely safe, sure its a little costlier than aftermarket maps but you also know it works, plus if your using an auto its a bit nicer to drive imo, knowing you won't loose anything if you ever need to update the TCM too. |
