I've had a look into this since that post quoted above. The ones with the black engine covers are still euro 4 engines, but Volvo must have changed the colour of the engine cover at some point around 2009 ish.

I managed to fix the link rod on my car, so it appears to be working now

Do the swirl flaps open/close constantly? So do they open on start up & remain open whilst driving & then close when the engine is off?

They are closed at low rpm and open up under power , It is to create swirl in the combustion chamber, with one of the two inlet ports shut the air going in is twice as fast swirling to create a cleaner burn and help emissions , It may increase torque too at low rpm

So when you start the car, the link rod moves & then when you turn it the car off, it moves back again? Is the movement engine temperature related? The reason I ask is my Dad replaced the link rod on his V70, but it doesn’t seem to move back & forth when he starts & stops the car (He tested it whilst stationary).

So does the link rod move when you start/stop the engine, but doesn’t actually open/close the flaps? It puts them in a position to open/close so to speak?

yes the motor calibrates itself with a full stroke every time you turn the engine off . This can clean off any soot from the internal mechanism and keep it from jamming . Some People on here restrict the full travel with a stop for some reason which will interfere with this process , Volvo know what they are doing :-)

I'd heard that the motor recalibrates every 5th time the engine is turned off.

On mine, occasionally I hear the whining of the motor going back and fourth for about 10 seconds - this happens when I turn the engine off after it's fully warmed up. I've not counted the engine starts in between, but it definitely doesn't seem like every time. I'm just mentioning this in case someone thinks there's a fault if they don't see it moving each time they shut the engine off.

In terms of it moving when the engine is started, I would suspect it's already in a position corresponding with slow vehicle speed when you stop the engine, therefore it's likely to remain in that position when you next start the engine, and not move until the car/engine is at a certain speed.
