If you can change oil you can change GB fluid.
Just takes longer due to measuring what came out

I went on a longer run yesterday, about 24 miles each way, there was one decent slippage from 2nd to 3rd and some hard charges, these only showed themselves once i started entering Kings Lynn outskirts. I did watch a video earlier saying that prob not the best idea to flush or even change the fluid due to the internal parts already accustomed to the dirty fluid, adding new fluid could make things worse as it would be thinner

Were I you Bashy I'd do at least one drain & fill.
You can see how dirty your fluid is. Decide on doing more at that time. I've serviced 5 of these autos with both drain & fills and full pump outs (aka Gibbons) and never experienced anything but improvements. These were family members' cars so I heard what ensued. Tallying up the costs of a valve body replacement is good to do should you need to go that route. Don't do that first. Doing one or more drain & fills is the better place to start as so many people report BIG IMPROVEMENTS. PLUS, you want to get the fluid clean first. |

See, that right that is the reason i said about putting the money towards a valve body replacement

I am also trying to find the correct fluid on ebay, struggling a little as i cant find out which after market one i need, but i can see why the volvo specialist wants £250 to do a double now lol damn that stuff is expensive Looks like that by the time ive bought the fluid, torque wrench, allen bits, oil pan, jug, funnel etc i might just as well get the v/s to do it by the looks of things, i take it theres no external oil filter to change?

Pumping out a car's transmission is quite passive. The trans has a pump and all one needs to do is disconnect a cooling line. Sometimes the word "flush" connotes use of a violent, forceful machine of questionable effectiveness.
A drain & fill is ultimately simple. But still, some fools call that a flush too. So, if you call some garage your unfamiliarity of what's involved is painfully apparent to the listener. The magic, loaded word "flush" is used and it's time for the garage guy to hang up. FYI: The tools and materials needed are minimal. It sounds like you're not equipped. Do you even have ramps? You need a 24mm wrench for the plug. A catch pan is $15. I paid $8 for mine. A funnel to which you add a short piece of tubing. That's not much gear at all. That you included "jug" on your "can't do" list is telling. Changing some fluid is just that. If you're equating it as a determining percentage of a valve body replacement job you have no idea how simple it is to do. You're now at the mercy of people who don't want to deal with you except to take your money. Remember, many of these local garage folk aren't to be trusted to use the correct fluid. And no, there's no serviceable, external filter. The case of the transmission must be separated to access it. Last edited by Georgeandkira; Jan 30th, 2020 at 12:18. |

I do have ramps (I thought is had to be level?) but sadly the bumper is to low so i will als have to purchase some extensions for them and i need more than just a 24mm dont i? what about the plug to check the levels etc? Youre correct in saying i am not equipped, not as far as doing this job, i could remove a strut, i am equipped for that sort of thing, i can even remove dents to a PDR standard, i am equipped for that to just not got the correct equipment for fluid changes is all .
