Smile Totally new to Volvo and looking to buy my first V50!

Morning all.

I'm in the market for a new car having had a raft of 1.9TDI PD VWs. I've loved the look of the C30 for yonks, but need an estate sized car for the family and trips etc. I think the V50 fits the bill well and am looking for the 1.6TDCI, but have to admit to being a bit confused over the engine. I'm looking for 2011 and above I think - there's one for sale locally with 98k on the clock.

I'm covering 50 miles a day on mainly motorway with a little a road thrown in. Around 16k a year.

Any guidance on who makes the 1.6 TDCI [believe it to be the Ford engine?]. I understand the potential issues around DPFs on all modern diesels and believe that the longevity of these 1.6 engines is regular oil changes in between servicing?

Any thoughts and guidance is gratefully received.

Thanks!

Si.

I cannot quote on the 1.6 diesel engine as never had one, but I have heard a lot of owners saying how its underpowered for the vehicle.

maybe keep an eye out for the 2.0D or D3 units? they are good engines.

Had a 2.0D and was a great running, good mpg and more than enough power.

Thanks for the input fella.

I kind of like the fact that the 1.6TDCI cheap tax too!

fair enough, I think its really just the dpf issue to look out for on these. Thats all you hear on the forums. Other than that there is just the usual volvo niggles

- Sun roof leak issue
- boot loom issue
- worn bushes and mounts

If you go see one at that mileage its worth checking the voltage and that the alternator is charging as these go off in a spectacular display of dashboard lights. If the battery is flat, the alternator is most likely goign to be on the way out.

Check the air conditioning works, if not the usual culprits are the condenser or compresor.

Make sure regular oil changes have been met etc

Appart from that a well looked after example should defenitly do the job.

D3, D4, D5 are the diesel engines to buy in these cars (Volvo engines).

Tax will be higher though...

D2/1.6d and 2.0d are ford/peugeot engines and can be niggly, especially at the 80-100k mark where people sell them once the DPF gets blocked.

Thanks mate. Are these the 2.0 diesels?

Only driven the 1.6D when mine was being serviced, felt fine on flat roads but horrendous on hills.

DPF issues aside, mine doesn't have one, the engine is a decent match to the car, not super quick but not slow either. Mines on 211K with no issues but like I said, no DPF.

Hi Raker,

I'm going to tag onto this thread if you don't mind as I'm looking at a 2009 2.0D @ a mileage of 120k. Full service history. I drove it this morning and I have to say I'm in love.

Is there anything I should be looking out for?

Cheers!

Looking at some of the reviews it seems that the DRIVe 8V 115 which the one I'm looking at is, could well be too small an engine for the size of the car? The fact that it has the dry DPF etc helps put my mind at ease ever so slightly, but I'm wondering if a remap would either make it slightly more drivable or just put extra strain where it need not be. I'm used to a 130bhp 1.9 - got a feeling this little 1.6 will be underwhelming. Only one way to find out I guess!
