Default May have to get a xc90, a couple of questions

We’ve just realised that the boot space on my trusty v70 isn’t really sufficient for the camping holiday we’ve just come back from (with a trailer tent and roofbag).
Blooming kids!

Considering changing for a 90 (most likely exec version), but have a few questions..

Ideally I’d be looking for an D5 E3 manual, but it seems manual versions with a good specification are somewhat thin on the ground.

What year did the E3 engine get superseded? Assume around same time as V70?
What mpg is expected from the D5 engines (2004-2007)?
I’ve already found out that the T6 variant has a voracious appetite for gearboxes and petrol. So unlikely to get one of those!

Did all the executive models get the fridge in the armrest? Child’s on medication that has to be kept cool, so this appeals.

Are there any weak points over a v70/xc70 (other than the awd and extra weight) to be aware of?

Sure I’ll be asking more questions!

So mechanically they're the same as the XC70 and the E3 engine was superceeded in MY2005. The extra weight seems to take its toll on the gearbox and the 5-speed AW55 is slightly more fault prone than in the lighter 70 but no where near as problematic as the GM unit fitted in the T6. If you get one - get the gearbox oil changed, it makes all the difference.

Only 1 in 20 XC90's were manual so as you say finding one is much harder, one of the reasons that manual cars have a lower spec it they were cheaper.

The extra weight is harder on the front brakes and suspension but there are still some well cared for examples out there with good history.

My 2003 D5 (auto) will do about 34 mpg on the motorway at a steady 70-75, 27-28 around town.

The plus side is they were the smoothest, most refined and economical diesel XC90's made.

Thanks, that’s useful - it’s basically an overgrown xc70 then!

Definitely after a Euro 3 as I don’t do high mileage and would be wary of dpf issues, also just bought the tool for changing e3 injector clamps for my 70 as I wasn’t considering replacing it for a long time.

This is where e-bay is your friend - you can search specifically for manual cars. Think you can on Autotrader too.

Out of all the T6 gearboxes i have seen in the last 16 years or so since they came out , just about all of them have had perfectly clean red oil irrespective of age and mileage even 100,000 mile + cars they look after their oil well . The only few i have dealt with with black oil were those with the leaking seals on the left driveshaft where the oil circulated around the CV joint , washing it out so you need a new gearbox AND Drive shaft !
yes T6 = horrible engine and horrible gearbox ...
