2004 XC70 Differential Electronic Module renewal
I am facing a £1,800 cost for renewing the DEM.
Has anybody had experience doing it themselves with an exchange unit ? I am currently looking at ECU testing, Heanor, Derbyshire. [URL="http://www.ecutesting.com/catalogue/product/volvo_xc70_ecu_elsd_-_electronic_limited_slip_differential_els222901-a.html"] Do I need to code it to the VIN using a VIDA ? Thanks.

I guess it wasn't reluctor rings then?
Not sure about the VIDA stuff but I had ECU Testing repair a faulty ABS module on my SAAB a few years ago and the process was easy and efficient. They are 10 minute drive away from me though so didn't have to post anything.

Differential Electronic Module (Haldex unit)
Thanks for the offer and suggestion Lukas.
The fault was still on after renewal of the corroded & cracked off side reluctor ring. The DEM is now at ECUtesting for testing and hopefully repair. I am running the car with a temp DEM provided and fitted by my independent. Having now researched what the Haldex unit is and does, next job is renewing the oil and filter and seeing if it does engage the rear wheels when the front spin. I suspect the oil has done 127k !!

So the fault has gone with borrowed DEM?

No, with the temporary DEM module I get the "Anti Skid Service required" with orange triangle, consistently. I believe this is because the temp module itself has a fault. But unlike my DEM it is consistent. In the days before my DEM was removed I was intermittently getting other fault messages "stop safely ABS brake failure" Red triangle, then a day with no messages at all, then the "Anti Skid service required". I was told by both independents and the main dealer, who all read the fault codes, that the fault description relating to poor communication indicated that the DEM was first item to test/renew. When the reluctor rings were renewed the "anti Skit Service required " message along with the same fault codes still appeared. I am told that the signals to the DEM from the other modules are as expected, adding more weight to the fault being within the DEM.
May be the car had two faults, split reluctor ring and a defective DEM. .

Anti Skid service required, DEM fault
Update, DEM tested by ECUTesting, "unable to repair"
Still running it FWD only with a defective 2nd hand DEM and permanent yellow triangle. Searching for a 2nd hand DEM from a scrapper. "Rocking Horse ........" comes to mind. As it will fail the MOT with the yellow triangle, the plan is continue looking for a 2nd hand DEM until mot due Aug, if nothing turns up and no other major spend in pipe line I will have a new DEM fitted. £1800 ish Still, we like the car. "better the devil you know"

Refurbished DEM, a big big thank you.
I now have a fully functioning AWD transmission for a fraction of the Volvo main dealers price.
A big big thank you to NigelS, Kenny37 for advice, spokoluzik (volvodiagnostic.com) who supplied me with a refurbished DEM (Differential Electronic Module) and local independent garage for doing the work. In summary the DEM failed with "anti skid service required" message, orange triangle. During my investigation, I disturbed a cracked reluctor ring that caused a "stop safely ABS brake failure", red triangle message. Both front reluctor rings renewed. Refurbished DEM fitted, after proving AOC pump was not faulty. Proof that the VOC membership is definitely very good value for money.
