Default 164 so cheap

Recently ended on ebay, but prob due to a) listed in wrong section (spares), b) no photo's to begin with, and c) right on top of Christmas. Still, if I'd have had access to a LEZ-compliant van plus trailer I would have bid on it, despite it being without papers and keys (executors sale).
Later pics implied no serious body rot, but as I know the buyer I will get the full facts soon. This goes to show how little these big old cars are worth now, yet one can't help noticing the prices some people put on rot-box Fords. I mean, 5 grand for a barn find Escort van? Whatever next.

Didn't see that unsurprisingly! Not the best time to sell though.
Presentation makes a big difference though, I still hear of people buying good cars for peanuts on eBay just because of a minor fault.

Hi, I couldn't find the car on ebay sold items - could you pop up a link please? Or ask your friend to post up pictures of the car when collected?

Kind regards
Lucien

Clive...........

Paul will probably recognise this as a copy/paste from a mail I sent to him.

"You would need to confirm that the screen surround is the same for the early 240, don’t have a part number for that, as it is for the 140/164. Volvo part number 1211316 for 140/160, but have a look at this.

If Nordicar have it maybe Simon at Brookhouse can get it too. Volvo never supplied a repair panel for the scuttle but there was one available from Veng which shows up in some pictures, including one for Scandcar. Doesn’t show on their site however. In effect NLA but that doesn’t mean that there isn’t an odd one lying on a shelf somewhere. Yes you might have to scrap some of the screen surround if you do it with one of those but the alignment should be good and it would be a single piece rather than lots of patches. A body shop would prefer that.

Belated reply as in my 164 at a car show.....

Derek - that Scandcar link looks like the right profile for the 164, ie dished at the central louvres. Certainly worth speaking to them.
Clive - as Derek says, a body shop would far rather replace the damaged parts with new metal (assuming it is the right panel), as nobody will chop up a good 40+ year old car to get one bit off that can be bought new anyway.
Did you look at a 164 in Doncaster - was it any good for you?

Was it 'Wayne Smith' and his son 'Danny Lee Smith' who owned the 164? They caused problems on the Volvo 240 Owners UK Facebook group I admin. Ridiculous, made threats to members and then decided to spread libel about Volvo owners/the 240 group on banger racing forums. Steer clear of them that's all I'll say.

They also asked for the number and address of one of the group's members so they could 'teach him a lesson'. I wont elaborate further, but you get the idea.

I've seen two 164s on Catawiki auctions in the Netherlands;
They're certainly appreciated far more there. Prices for all second hand cars are higher there though.

From what I've heard the Dutch version of the DVLA changed their car tax system last year. They used to have a floating tax-exemption age like we used to, but realised they had thousands of 25+ years old cars on the road, with the loss of income that defined..... It is now only for far older cars (40+?) so all those lovely 240s and 264s now don't qualify.
If you think that of little real pain, they now fall into the 700 euros tax bracket (ouch!) hence values of 164s are increasing. Fortunately for that model there are lots out there: this country will never have that many as most people seem incensed with economy-motoring over here. On the whole they want a small frugal box to nip around and to the shops in. They don't want a big sluggish barge, no matter how comfortable, and try getting a 164 into my local multi-story car park - its very tight and involves a lot of reversing.....
