The phase 1is truly a great car.I have had dealings or owned a few of them .the t5 is fantastic if you can find a good one .Will really bring a smile to your face!
Sold mine before it got me in trouble ! Have also had a phase2 .Mmm.......not bad but constantly throwing faults ,usually electronic . One thing you will have to work out is ,what types of code reader you need for fault finding on phase ones as the earlier ones are not always fully OBD2 compliant .Many posts about that . the abs ecu is a famously unreliable but easily replaced ,repaired. But overall the phase one was a great car ,and there are a few good ones about ,although they are getting less . If you are a mechanic ,they will always repay your attention and justify repair work . As a workhorse they are unsurpassed .God knows how much it would cost to build such quality in todays money !

bournricha, the consensus seems to be with you, the phase 1 cars are what my mates dad, a man I call 'Spanner Fingers' would refer to as 'proper cars'. The type of thing that is fixable/maintainable without the huge collection of bespoke expensive tools/fitting kits to merely change the oil. I've found a decent v70 (170) and I'm planning on going to look at it this weekend, the car has been sat for a year in a dealer and its got 128k on, it has service history but the cambelt was last done 10 years ago. The dealer is offering the car at 1150 with the option of a 500 retail package which seems to address the cambelt as it include a full service, mot and valet plus anything the car needs to be fully functional. The car is 100 miles away from me so I think I'll need to get the car up to scratch before I drive it home, this is the car

She was sitting with no MOT since 2013, that is 3 years stationary soon. And massively overpriced. I'd go for something like https://www.gumtree.com/p/ford/volvo...295/1175369683 (no connection to me, just an example), replace seats with leather ones, respray bumpers, fix the passenger door and still stay within £600 budget. May be not this particular car, the mileage looks dodgy, but you can find a decent V70 for less than £500. Last edited by Vladislav; Jul 18th, 2016 at 14:54. Reason: . |

3 years is a long to be sat, I'd never appreciate it.
The price looked ok to me but then again I'm a little green at this kind of thing, 1650 does seem very high for a car that's sat there for 3 years. I'll keep looking. |

Stick to ph1 if you can. I bagged a 96' 850 in 09 for 850 quid. It was on 138k. Clock conked at 198 k two years back. I'd drive it anywhere and it's the same bar body -almost- to a ph 1 V70.
I have a ph2 V70 too. 2004 SE 2.4 auto. 114k miles and although a nice drive it keeps chucking up leccy gremlins left right and Chelsea! My 27yr old. 240 is less hassle than both though, loll. Good luck

Does anyone think its worth going to see? Its 3 hours drive from my house and if its sat there for 3 years I'm wondering if I can negotiate.

Mmm.... It's your call, of course. But for 1150 from a dealer, I'd expect that to include the delivery service (cambelt et al). It is overdue after all.....
The 250 quid option in London? Have you asked if the belt kit has been done or at least 'in date'. That price leaves you a lot to spend on any little snags. Lots of car little money......... FWIW, 2nd hand car prices are way above UK prices here. In April I sold a 2.5 10v auto V70 1997 with circa 170k miles (280 odd kms) for 1000 euros. Hth's

The car has part service history and the belt was last changed at 90k which based on https://totalcarcheck.co.uk/FreeCheck?vdm=r362frt was 2008, if you click on the link you'll notice a strange jump back and forward in the mileage. Is that something I should be concerned about? I'll ask the guy either way.
Do the later rev interiors just drop in (figuratively speaking)? Last edited by LardFather; Jul 18th, 2016 at 16:48. |

Blimey, that's strong money for a car that's been sat., especially as I was offering mine for £450 with 13 months mot on it.
Good luck to you though, hope it's what you're after. |
