The unexpected breakthrough with the navigation disc suddenly becoming readable gave me the impetus to sort out another omission... The missing trim piece from under the right rear light.

Armed with the part number I phoned my local Volvo main dealer - Marshalls of Cambridge - and was told the part was £24. Bargain.

I swung by the dealership this morning on my way to work and enjoyed a thoroughly decent cup of coffee courtesy of Volvo while waiting for the parts guy. £29.52 later (obviously they quote the price without VAT, how helpful), the part is mine.

This evening I fitted it. The process being thus.

1. Take your newly acquired part and lay it out on your working area.

Note the red tape which covers the sticky pads that hold it to the light.

2. Prepare the light by cleaning off any residual grime to ensure a good quality stick. Use your specialist automotive grade cleaning wipe, just as I have as you can see.

3. Remove the tape and stick the thing on, ensuring it matches the one on the other side.

Marvel at your hard work and undeniable skills as a Volvo expert (maybe).

As ever, thanks for reading.

The clocks have changed, the evenings are drawing in, the temperature is dropping, and my XC90 has decided to add to the autumnal doom by throwing an error...

“Engine System Service Required” is now greeting us on each startup, though performance seems unaffected. The car has been doing a lot of short runs over the summer but recently had an hour and a half at 80mph journey back from Heathrow after we had a week in Ontario so I’d hoped this would have cleared out any cobwebs.

I have noticed mpg has seemingly been dropping in the past few thousand miles - to around 26 average down from 29 average but figured this was due to the weather getting cooler. Could this be linked to the error message?

It’s also making a noise like it’s lost it’s AC gas again, which is irritating as I only had it re-gassed in May.

The only thing that’s been different lately is that it was parked for a week at Heathrow rather than being used every day or two.

I’ll book it in with my indy but any suggestions what it could be? I’ve read it could be a fuel filter problem, but I’ll defer to the collective forum wisdom.

Thanks in advance for any advice.

For starters check that the swirl arm link is still in place.

Lift the engine cover and look to the left front corner of the cylinder head and you will see a stepper motor and a plastic arm that operates the swirl arms.

If this has popped off/broken you will get that message. Other faults can also cause it but you can check this one yourself in seconds.

If it is off, report back and I'll link to threads for a very cheap fix.

Amazing! You are absolutely right, the swirl flap arm has come off. How easy is this bad boy to reattach?

I have been reading your thread with a lot of pleasure and interest today ! From the whole discussion about getting a high mileage car that hardly has time to get a cold engine compared to diesel cars that were just used to drive to the supermarket 2 miles away and people still insist it is better to buy a car with a few miles ..... all the way through to the washers (being a Dutch native speaker I initially was under the impression this had to do with the headlight washers or windscreen wipers :-( ) the navigation issues as well as the trust one has to put in indies but with the knowledge of the whole forum behind you "to keep them honest", the family addition to the final remarkable fact a forum member can point you out in the right direction when you see a warning which could spell all kinds of disaster. Quite an odyssey in itself and congratulations on your family expansion.

Very interested as I want to give my honest 05 XC70 a slight break and put a 11-14 XC70 next to it, or a X3 or 3 touring x drive. And suddenly thinking about a XC90 reading this. I was wondering (having read about astronomical costs of running how a XC70 would compare to a XC90 in running costs ? I pay £350 for my insurance, £325 for my road fund licence (which is about 20-25% of the costs if it had a Dutch license plate so a doddle) £160 a year to park the car in the center of Brighton about 200 yards from the sea and wonder if these costs would be doubled with a XC90 ?

Furthermore you wrote somewhere you would like to give the "burn-it-yourself" navi discs a go if you had some ....... whilst still clearing the 10000 odd books in my dad's 2 studies in the Netherlands I have come across quite a stash of DVD-Rs so let me know how many you need and I can pick them up and post them your way or drop them off on one of my trips to Cambridge and Norfolk if that would help you experiment and as such helping other members of this forum with your newly gained experience.

Good luck with your sinum currus :-)

Push it back on for the time being.

There is a very cheap kit ( about £6 ) from Volvo which will repair it.

I thought the kit was flimsy and put a thin nut and bolt through the centre of that ball joint and it never budged again in the next 60 k.

Once the arm is properly attached the message will disappear over the following days. Obviously Vida could reset it again. I'll post other photos of my fix later this morning. That is not an expensive job provided the swirl arms themselves are ok.

Try the cheap fix first.

Buy direct from dealer and ask for discount

OR

This is how I fixed mine which is a far more substantial repair.

Trying to get a hole through the ball on the arm on the engine is very difficult/impossible with a drill but what worked for me like a charm was to drill a hole through the centre of the end of the link arm cup with it off the car the reattach .

You now have a centre point to work with. Get a small shorts nail and hold it in pliers before heating it to cherry red.

Push this thin nail through the pre drilled hole and you should make an indentation on the plastic ball below it.

Remove the plastic arm and then continue with the thin nail reheating when necessary until you have burnt through the ball entirely.

You can then either fit the volvo kit or a nut and bolt.

Fitting a stopper as mentioned in the thread is particularly useful.

Good luck.

Wow I don't know how to thank you! Brilliant information and fantastic you were able to successfully diagnose the problem based solely on my (probably iffy) description!

I've reattached the arm which itself seems in good shape, i.e, not broken or fractured, so hopefully this will keep me going for a while. I'll probably order one of those repair kits so I have the parts necessary when I need them.

I don't know how it came off, but thinking it through there are some bumpy tracks we regularly drive down as part of taking my sons to rugby so maybe this is behind it? Who knows.

Thank you very much again.

Thanks very much for your warm words and for taking the time to post. I've benefited hugely from threads similar to this with regard to other cars so I figured I'd try and return the positive karma with a thread of my own, and I'm glad you've found it so useful.

In terms of the DVD-Rs, that's a very generous offer but I was fortunate enough that the hitherto unreadable navigation disc suddenly decided it could be read, therefore allowing the navigation to update itself. I'm now leaving it will alone and probably will continue to do so for a number of years!

With regards to your question of XC90 vs. XC70 costs, I can't speak for your insurance or parking at Brighton but I will try to help with others. The Executive XC90 I have is in quite a high insurance group so I'd imagine it will cost more than your XC70, but you might be surprised. Road tax for the XC90 was £325 last time I bought it, and it's doing around 28 to 32 mpg on average, running on standard (decent brand) diesel. I can't think this is significantly different to your XC70.

I love BMWs but not a fan of the X3 so I'd struggle to recommend it. The 3 Series Touring X Drive I'm sure is a great car (years ago I had a E46 330i Touring which was fab) but is a LOT smaller than the XC90. This may not be a problem for you, but you'll be sacrificing a lot of interior space by opting for that car over the XC90.

A brief aside though, even my XC90 felt tiny inside and out compared to the car I hired in Ontario...

Ah, but that isn't a car - it's basically a truck with an adapted load area.
The XC90 is without doubt a car and can be driven like one
I love mine for that reason.
