Hi - I have a similar query. I need to top up the steering fluid for my Sreg V70 and the manual says Pentosin CHF 11 S but where can I buy this without having to go online?

My local petrol station sells Total (brand) Dexron - would this be ok?

Not arguing with anyone as we all do as we want with our motors

But my `98 V70 Handbook says use ATF

Post Ford
My 2001 S40 Handbook says use ATF. Alternatively use Pentosin CHF 11 S
if the vehicle is used mainly in areas with temperatures below zero C
There is no need to change the oil !!

So that mean`s that red ATF does not do any damage in the later car

Spooky coincidence, I posted a similar question in the General area

http://www.volvoforums.org.uk/showthread.php?t=145965

It does seem there's some conflicting information (from manuals and handbooks) about the type of fluid required and I wonder if this is one of those cases of it depends on the precise model and date of manufacture? I'm gooing to try dipping the reservoir before I go any further.

I am in the very rare, or possibly unique, position on here of having the S70/V70 Volvo handbooks for the 1997, 1998 and 1999 model years; they say to use:

1997 ATF
1998 ATF
1999 Pentosin CHF II S

As it has been said that using the correct fluid is critical, I will also post this on the other active thread on the subject.

Conflicting information.???..that seems to be the norm for cars from the "nightmare" years....ie around 1999/2000.
My V70 is late '98 (S) registered ('99MY)..neither the handbook or the Haynes manual (up to V reg) makes any mention of Pentosin.
Dexron III/Duckhams..yes.!

In my 1999MY S70/V70 handbook it says Pentosin CHF II S on page 7:10. Could you check what it says on that page in yours please?

P.S. Agreed. The Haynes manual is not fully accurate in this regard for all model years.

Just been out to check, Sreg 98, doesn't look like dexron ATF - wrong colour, wrong smell. At this rate I might have to talk with the local dealer (will they know?).

Note the fluids are quite different, ATF is red and relatively thick in comparison to the green very thin fluid required on the later models.
ATF in the later model destroys the seals.

Ya learn something every day.!!...My handbook say ATF..Haynes says ATF...yet the fluid is definitely thin and "greenish"..which I assume means it's Pentosin.!!...Now had I not read this thread..and needed to top up my PS fluid, I WOULD have used ATF.!! (without possibly checking physically what was already in it.!!)...what a mistake THAT would have been.!!!
Thanks for the heads up.!
