2000 V70 Starting Problem

2000 V70 Classic 2.4 170bhp 108000miles
1. Have got it booked into a main agent next week to investigate an intermittent starting problem. (££££££££!)
It is normally a first time starter, but occasionally fails to start. On many subsequent crankings it fires for half a second and then dies. This can occur when the engine is hot or cold. So far I have always got it to start eventually, sometimes by leaving it for a while or by flooring the accelerator. Once running, it has not failed - yet. The agent’s receptionist mentioned the possibility of a dirty throttle module. Someone else suggested that the immobiliser gets its knickers in a twist and I was advised to try turning off the ignition, locking and unlocking the doors and trying again. This actually worked when it happened this morning, perhaps coincidentally?
I would appreciate any thoughts or advice before entrusting it to the tender mercies of the agent?
2. Incidentally, I have had the car for nearly two years and have asked them to run it through VADIS and report. They will do this and give me their own report on the findings, but refuse to give me a copy of the VADIS printout. Is this normal?
3. Another issue – the car falls into the years for the fan problem recall, but the agent advises that it is not necessary on this one. Is there a list of these chassis numbers available?

I've been through this with my '99 2.4T

The problem was a poor connection on the immobilizer anntena ring, this is round the ignition lock barrel.

You can gain access to it by removing the lower cover from the steering column.

The resistance of the coil should be 5 ohms +/- 10%

Check the coil resistance and the illimination lamp for poor contact.

Just removing the conection cleaning it and replacing it should do it.

Be careful not to damage the orange wiring to the air bag.

I have the same model and 'had' the same symptom. Had it 'fixed' (too early to tell yet) this week at a main dealers. The cure I paid for was a replaced antenna ring, cost of part £12.60, cost of Vadis & test £31.40, probably VAT on top of this.

Followed your instructions, coil resistance is OK - 5.3ohms. Cleaned the connector pins and reassembled. A dozen or so starts and no problems.
The bulb is working OK, but it probably needs replacing. The top part of the glass is soft and spongy! I don't know how it is still working. It does look like a non-standard pattern bulb, which I suppose I will have to get from a Volvo agent. It is not listed in the handbook or mentioned in Haynes (which often tends to run out of the information you need.)
If the lamp is faulty, is this likely to cause a problem?
I have cancelled my booking with the agent, phew! I will wait a bit longer for the VADIS run.

You will never know whether the antenna ring was faulty, I wonder if they tested it before replacing?
This does not sound too expensive for VADIS. Did it show up anything you did not know about and did they give you a full print-out or just their own report?

I have a v70 with a similiar problem but the car will start and then die. RPM to 1200 and then directly down to 400 then quit. Will not start again unless I turn off the key and turn it back on. Keep trying and finally it will idle and runs fine. I sometimes cannot get the key out. I will clean the connections and then clean the shifter end to free up the unlock cable. Do you think this is the problem, bad connections in the immobilizer ring??

Your problem sounds more like a dirty throttle body.

The immobilizer problem is either no start or runs for 2 seconds then stops.

Morning all, I am having this problem, I started the car this morning, Started fine and ran for 30 seconde then cut out, Message displayed was "service alarm system" & "Immobiliser fault" Then it wouldnt start, Starting for approx 0.5 seconds then cutting out and immobiliser fault consult manual displaying I have took the antenna ring from around the barrell and the little blue bulb has blown, Im assuming this is for when its dark so nothing to do with my problem, Then i got my multimeter on the pins of the antenna ring when connected, Getting some readings on all of them, Then wiggled the connector and got no readings, Can anybody shed some more light on this from past experience, I think my antenna ring is ok, Its the block connector at fault, Im going to try and stiffen the connections up somehow but any more advice would be greatly appreciated, Thanks alot.
