Default Wingmirror Whistle

When I got my V40, the wingmirrors had gaffer tape around them where they join to the body. It looked unsightly so have removed it. I now realise why it was there, the wind seemes to whistle through the gap at this joint.

Is there any aesthetic solution to this problem?

What about a bead of black silicon or windscreen adhesive? Although it shouldn't be doing it in the first place.

Hmm, thought about that but they are supposed to be able to fold in and they silicone would stop them being able to do that

My S40 does exactly the same thing, but only above 150mph.....so not very often a problem....I'm guessing yours does this at normal road speeds?

Yeah normal road speeds, a little annoying but I can live with it, I just wondered if it was a common problem and what people tend to do about it

Simple fix for whistling mirrors. You can buy self adhesive foam over the internet from the likes of a company called Vehicle Wiring Products, you need some which is about 3mm thick (closed cell foam so that it doesn't soak up and retain water). My passenger mirror did this at 30mph and above.
  • Fold back the mirror and properly clean all the muck off the exposed curved face.
  • Cut a 6mm wide strip of the self adhesive foam just slightly shorter than the height of the mirror itself.
  • Remove the backing from the foam and securely apply the foam vertically about 6mm or so back from the front edge of the exposed curved surface.
  • Carefully fold the mirror out ensuring the foam stays in position and doesn't lift off as the mirror is folded out.
  • You're good to go, no more whistling mirror and you can fold the mirrors in and out as and when you need to
