I realise this is an old thread but just thought i'd throw in my to cents...

I once drove all the way from Edinburgh to Stirling in my 460 2.0CD with my foot firmly on the floor, i had it at 140mph on the speedo, the maximum saved on the gps was 122mph, most likely on a sloped section. The engine was in perfect condition at the time, i had just fully overhaulled the top end after the timing belt had snapped and given it a full service, engine was running sweet as a nut.

Volvo claim the 850 T5R/R does 155mph, thats not true. Car magazine took it to Millbrook and the best they could get out of it was 142 with a tail wind.

Cheers
Mike

In this case the GPS was more like the true figure , there isnt enough BHP for the 2 litre to do 140 mph . I have modified 440 turbos to 150 bhp and the most they can do is 135 mph ..

Mike, the comments made about driving at wholly dangerous illegal and inappropriate speeds on the public highway that you have written about are against the rules of the forum.

Apologies for this, in retrospect i agree that it was not appropriate for me to say this, i was young and foolish at the time and it's not the kind of behaviour i would condone nowadays.

I'd of thought it would of done a bit more than 142mph
I've had my VW Passat upto a genuine 159mph but then mine does have just over 300bhp and is a lot more aerodynamic

oh and before anyone says I shouldn't be going that fast, I must say that I work for a large car manufacturer and I had my car on their own private test track

I've had my S70 (2.5 20v) reading an indicated 145mph (on an airfield, I hasten to add!). I realise that's not going to be completely accurate, but I'm thinking Car magazine must have had a duff car if they could barely go any faster with a snail strapped to the side! An original 855 T5 supposedly did ~180mph with the speed limiter removed on the test track, although they eventually wound the boost down a bit for the production versions.

As for the 440 twin turbo conversion....it's not that crazy an idea. There's very little space for a single larger turbo in a 400 (space being the usual reason for multiple turbos), and ethanol will give better detonation suppression than petrol. Sounds like an interesting car, if it's for real...although with the the sort of power on tap that that car would have with that hardware setup, I'd expect more than 160 would be possible with the right gearing.

cheers

James
