Easiest way to fix leaking sump plug
Hi, my sump plug leaks and I don't want to tighten it more, as I fear I will break the thread. I have replaced the sump plug and I have put in a new copper washer. It still leaks!
Should I change to a better type washer? Any ideas? George Bear |

You just wrap it around the thread on the sump plug about 6-8 times, and pop it back in the sump.....Might work? DB

alternativly smear the threads/mating faces with hylomar that should sort, it however have you had a good look at the mating faces if there ok and with a new washer it should not leak however do not overtighten the plug 25lbs /ft is the max

You need the Volvo sump plug washer, I think they are 50p. They are copper and have a rubber seal that seals it. They can only be used once though! Can be bought from Volvo or gsfcarparts.com

Hi,
Quote:
Dealers sometimes include the washer with the filter when you buy a filter (they charge for the washer mind!). None of the washers I have been given, or have removed from the sump, have had a rubber seal. Des. . .

PTFE sounds good but the only problem is you need to be careful bits don't come off and get into the sump. Should only need to wrap it round once or twice, that's all plumbers do on things like rad valves
Try cleaning up the mating face of the sump. Chow is currently "unavailable" on this forum until next wednesday (or will it be forever?... time will tell....) but I'm sure he wouldn't mind me correcting him, as I think he means 25Nm of torque rather than 25 lb/ft. Pete |

All fixed, Thanks!
I visited my Volvo spare parts shop and got a couple of "real" Volvo sump plug washers.
They are of a soft copper wrapped around a rubber seal. They cost me Aus$2.00 ea. I fitted one, and it fixed the problem straight away. Thanks for the tip. George Bear |

No problem GeorgeBear!
Nothing more frustrating than a leaking sump! Hope you didn't lose too much oil fitting it (probably all down your hand and arm!) Mark. |
