Check the brake and, if applicable, clutch switches on the pedal box under the dash.

(unrelated problem) the car seems to run out of fuel when the fuel guage reads 3 - 4 gallons left fuel light does not come on till the car comes to a halt (run out) has only just started to play up another pain. As Chris has said, the brake switch seems a likely cause. You can't tell by just looking. In my case I pressed it towards the top of the brake pedal until it clicks a couple of times and this adjusted it closer. It worked for me and my cruise control is now working again.

The cruise control will not operate if it senses the brakes are being applied. The problem is if the switch is oversensitive then it may cause the brake lights to come on even if you are not pressing the brake pedal. it can be adjusted by pushing the switch towards the top of the brake pedal but if the switch is worn (like mine) then during brake operation it has a tendency to push the switch back again. I'd replace the switch to see if this helps.
