Default Extended Warranty - Via Volvo Main Dealer or 3rd Party?

Our XC60 is just coming to the end of it's manufacturers warranty and we're looking at extending as the car has only done 42000 miles.

Bells Northampton have just quoted £895 for the 2 years/100 000 miles for our XC60. (stated 1 year extensions would be: Year 4 - £445 60000 miles /£495 80000 miles, Year 5 - £550 100000 miles) so £100 saving to buy 2 years in advance.

Warranty Direct £788 for 2 years (all options checked) with a £50 excess and uncapped labour.

Motor easy £945 for 2 years Plan A with £50 excess - with 10% discount to be applied if bought today making it £850!

Anyone got any thoughts, experiences or recommendations re using these companies versus via Volvo main dealer? (actual warranty is apparently 3rd party anyway)

With Covid + brexit, I would advise to do it at a Volvo dealer. Then you are paying Volvo for the service and even if a dealer goes bankrupt, you can use the warranty on another dealer.

Completely agree, Volvo dealer all the way. Even though it is provided through a third party the dealership have an interest in keeping you happy. And then selling you another car once the extended warranty is up.

I certainly wouldn’t trust driving one of these cars without any form of warranty. The individual components are just too expensive when they go pop.

That's certainly my thinking. As I mentioned a while back, I have a Volvo extended warranty and about six months into it I had failed crank and camshaft oil seals. Not covered (classed as oil leaks), but Volvo contributed 95% of the £1400 cost. Can't confirm either way, but my guess is that having the volvo warranty might have influenced them a little. On the other hand, of course, if you can find a warranty that covers oil leaks that would be a more reliable approach, I guess... On the plus side, it does mean I've had the cam belt renewed FoC

Have they paid out the 50% on your replacement ERAD?

Not quite. I will explain. My options were (or are):-

1. Volvo warranty was extended on the part to 5 years so I could have 50% paid by Volvo and pay the other 50% myself. We tried for goodwill from Volvo to make up to 100% but got a flat "no".

2. Go to aftermarket warranty for 100%.

Option 2 has worked out as the warranty company has authorised the repair and authorised the full amount. Part is now on back order and they are being quoted August earliest. Car is challenging to drive but I am kind of getting the hang of it.

So at this point my £599 is looking like the best investment ever. However I will only believe it when I have a working car and paperwork which says nothing to pay. I have no reason to think they will renege on the authorisation but I just never believe a deal until it is done.

An interesting discussion which I will have to consider in 12 months time when my 3 years is up.

As a very low mileage user I would like to ask if any of the people who offer extended warranties take mileage into account when pricing up their warranties as 60,000 and 100,000 miles isn't of any interest to me. More likely that 10,000 and 15,000 miles would be the sort of mileage I would do over a 2 year period.

Mostly there is a high mileage limit as the only stipulation. A low mileage discount is not something I have heard of before. I had to go aftermarket at the end of 3 years as the Volvo warranty only goes up to 100k miles and my car was already at 85k miles. My aftermarket warranty has a stipulation of no more than 100k at the outset, with no upper mileage limit during the term.

My situation is may not be typical as my Dec 2017 XC60 R Design (petrol) with Polestar. I purchase the XC in May of 2018 with 5k mileage. I have to put a total of 5k miles no miles during the last four months. End of 3-year warranty in December 2020. I am going for the Volvo 1 year extended warranty at £445 not sure if I should go for 2 years. Working on sod's law even with low mileage it may be my bad luck to get a problem even with such low miles. Warranty Wise wanted £450 Warranty Direct £300. Or should I take the risk without a warranty due to the very low mileage? If I take a Warranty it will be with Volvo.
