Failed Wheel ABS sensor - Traction Control behaviour
2003 XC90
My ABS light has recently come on. Ive read the codes and I have BCM-011 (Faulty Front left sensor). I also have BCM-0136 Brake Pressure sensor but that is not a red warning so hoping that is a red herring. I've got more investigation to do to confirm whether the sensor has failed or it relates to the Reluctor ring and because of other priorities that wont be done for a few days so whilst i know its important to fix i can live with it. What is more of a concern, and i think is related is the effect this is having on the Traction control / DSTC.... and can be quite dangerous. My driveway is on a busy main road, and every so often when i make the decision to pull out the car has absolutely no power at all, and the warning light next to the ABS warning comes on (vehicle snaking symbol). Once I've made it out onto the road, apologised to the cars that have had to anchor their brakes on because I'm doing less than 5mph, pulled over, the light seems to extinguish and then seems ok for the rest of the journey - although i have only had to do short trips since its been happening. Please can anyone fill in some knowledge / gaps I have in the system here and importantly can i temporarily disable this behavior until the ABS issue is resolved? Is it just a matter of ensuring the DSTC button is switched off / not lit before the journey, or is some more significant action required to disable it. I read about a key sequence of 5 button presses to disable but think that is for different models - that procedure suggests you should get a message such as 'DSTC reduced'. All i can get is is 'Spin Control On or Off' Thanks Nick |

The easiest thing to check is the reluctor ring. You can see it quite easily where the drive shaft enters the wheel. Look for cracks/missing teeth. Fix the ABS and the other issues will go away.

Yes its all likely related - you can stop it from doing that though by turning of DSTC using the button on the dash as soon as you start the car.
The erroneous readings make the car think its in a skid so it throttles back the engine.

Thanks both. Turning DSTC off also gave some rather strange behaviour. Whilst engine power seemed ok, car seemed to be refusing to move up from 1st gear (auto box).
I've decided i need to sort it. I've ordered a new sensor in the hope that its is that rather than the reluctor ring as i cant see anything wrong with that, however that may take a few days to arrive so in the meantime i thought i would try to test. I thought you could measure resistance as a test so I got the meter out this morning and measured the left (faulty) side - open circuit. Great i thought - it has failed. Just to be sure i thought i'd measure the resistance of the right hand sensor which is not displaying a fault.. - also open circuit! Have i got my understanding wrong about how you test these? How can i test? Thanks Nick |

I had a bad ABS sensor, but that didn't affect at all the way the car was driving, only the ABS system was off. Make sure your front wheel geometry is good and the steering wheel is really centered when going straight, on the motorway. You may have other issues if you also get Anti-Skid messages.
But if the car stalls or looses power, I think you need to look somewhere else. Inspect all grounds around the engine and all red power cables. Also the small connector at the starter. You may also have a DEM corroded - worst case - which can cause the car to stall https://xemodex.com/us/product/diffe...6001749-10-20/

I'd started by having a drive with live speed data for each wheel running in Vida.
You should soon spot an anomaly if there is one.

Thanks all who have replied so far to this thread. so the latest....
Yesterday a new left front ABS sensor arrived so duly fitted last night so i went a short while with no ABS message, and the BCM-011 message is no more. However this afternoon the triangle warning light came on (not accompanied by the ABS warning) and a message in the display saying anti-skid service required. On the way home i also noticed heavy vibration a speed. My front right wheel is warm, front left is hot! Got home and first thing i did was to fire up Vida which is reporting:- - red warning BCM-0136 (Brake pressure sensors 1&2 signal outside its permitted range - amber / yellow warning BCM-0133 (Brake pressure sensor 2 signal too low) I've jacked up the front of the car and with ignition off the front right wheel is incredibly difficult to turn by hand. The front left nearly impossible. Just to add for completeness - wind back a couple of years ago, i had a problem with the front left getting hot but not the front right. There was no warning messages. Caliper appeared to be seized and because of this i had to change the brake pads winding back pistons in the process. The problem with the caliper vanished . Any thoughts? - have i got a mechanical problem causing electronic warning or electronic problem causing a mechanical one? Can the system still apply pressure to the brake circuits even with the ignition off? Help please - next troubleshooting steps?- supposed to be towing a caravan in a weeks time. As it is at the moment dont even like driving the car on its own!!! Thanks Nick |
