Starting problem - Advice please
Hi,
I have had a few starting problems within the last 10 days on my C70 T5, 2001 model. When attempting to start the engine catches, fires up, the revs go to approx 1K revs then dies. This has happened when engine both hot and cold. Sometimes this happens the once before starting ok the next try, yesterday the car took 10 minutes and as many attempts before it started. I was just about to call the RAC ! No warning lights come on, I dont know how old the battery is. The alternator was replaced approx 2 years ago. Am I right in thinking the battery is the suspect? Unfortunately I dont have access to a code reader, assuming this would even show up. Advice please. Regards,Steve

Does it fire for about one second then die? If so check out the alarm immobiliser aerial which is a ring fitted around the ignition switch, when these go U/S or get dirty contacts the car fires for about one second then dies. As a start point disconnect it and clean the connector - Mike

From all of my experiences of the antenna ring (about £30 from Volvo and easy replacement for DIY or a specialist) failing have been that the car will just crank but the engine will never fire. The number of attempts can vary and it just gets worse the longer you leave it.
Also if you do a code read, there will be a fault code stored related to immobiliser/ignition as a result of a failing antenna ring. I would have though that as the engine did fire for the original poster, perhaps the problem lies elsewhere.

Ah-Ha I've got exactly the same issue with exactly the same car.
Hmm take off the ignition ring & give it a clean as soon as I'm home. Thanks Everyone Andy |

I had exactly this problem - for me it was as easy as snapping the connector to the ignition back together. It went together with a nice solid click. I guess it had never been right. Starts first time every time now, touch wood.
I don't do any home repairs (because I'm a klutz), but the local volvo specialist forced my hand as they wouldn't do it, insisting that it would require a new ECU. It took me 20-30 minutes because I was ultra-cautious.

This is the same as my problem. Some days it starts first time, other times it can take 9 or 10, but only on a couple of occasions has the battery died before it started.
Is there a 'how to' anywhere please? Cheers |

my C70 used to take 2 or 3 goes at starting up, changed the ignition ring and now starts up every time. Changing it is easy and I'm no mechanic.
It never started then died though. mart |
