Re the suggestion I put forward regarding tyres, have you tried swapping your wheels front to back just to eliminate the possibility of it being the tyres that is causing the noise?

I haven't done that recently, but the noise was there before I had a complete set of 4 new tyres put on, and it's still there now. I will try the front to back swap though. It's a last ditched attempt, lol

Sounds like you need a new wheel bearing hub, i changed my right rear hub(V50) at 53k. Started noticing something was off at 52k and figured road noise or such.. it got worse and when i finally took it to the dealer a mechanic drove it only 200meters before he concluded rear right hub.
Unfortunately a common problem on our cars.

You will not notice any play until its totally shot.

Thanks, you're now the 4th person to tell me that they've replaced hubs / bearings on these cars at around the similar sort of mileage! Seems to me like a weak design if this is the case. I've decided i'm gonna bite the bullet and get it booked in at a good independant and get them to thoroughly check it over. There's only so much diagnosis you can get for free! lol.

How much am i looking at to replace a hub/bearing assembly? (I assume it comes as one part?). Anyone know where I can get one from? PartsforVolvos don't have any, neither do GSF. And I can't understand how to drive the Nordic website, lol.

Hoping it's not quite as much as that for one hub, but never mind. Is it worth getting a pair changed? (1 each side?). Would an equivalent Ford part fit and would it be cheaper?

Nordic has the hub kit for 140 pounds for each side. http://www.nordicpartsdirect.co.uk/ they have them under suspension/hub kits.

Unfortunately, Ford bearings will not fit, they have different dimensions. I know so because I too was shopping for front bearings due to a whooping noise, but when i changed to my GoodYear UG7+ winter tyres, luckily, all went quiet so the summer Pirelli P6000 were to blame and not the bearings.

Good luck.

so that's £320 inc Vat for 2 wheel hub / bearing assemblies. Plus fitting I guess i'm looking at around £500 in total. Ouch :|

I will wait to hear what the garage say on Thursday before I order anything.

Thanks for the link

Keep us informed.
I see noo need to change both if only one is shot. Ususally its a fluke when the bearing is gone at only 50+-k.
Many tales of the other hub lasting 120k+..

I'll let you know what the 2nd garage say tomorrow. I've found this on ebay link . I'm not sure about it to be honest, it's a LOT cheaper than the Nordic Volvo part and the seller has great feedback. I would want to know where it was from and who made it though. Any opinions?
