!982 245 2.1 su carb cutting out wont run.
Hello Everyone,
New member here.... I have a 1982 245 with the original 2.1 engine and su carb. Was super reliable until a year ago when it started cutting out while driving just for e brief second. The rev counter would drop, power would go then everything would cut back in again. Then it started to get worse and dot to the point where it wont run, starts, runs on choke but then keeps cutting out. Have replaced the coil checked dizzy, and leads and have even reconditioned the SU carb and its still doing it! Does anyone know if this model has a basic ecu or have any other ideas why it could be happening? HELP! |

Hi, checked as in removed cap and rotor?
Were there any contact breaker points under there? If not, then ecu. If points, then check gap (probably after replacing with new ones, because they wear as well as go out of adjustment, and give symptoms you've described. New distributor cap and rotor wouldn't go amiss, but keep the original Bougere(?) leads as they're better than any aftermarket. |

Thanks Bicycleboy,
No points under there. Do you know where the ecu would be located? Not having much luck finding it on the internet as all the info that comes up is to do with injection models. |

Sorry got a later engine, but wherever it is it'll have 2 wires to the distributor and one each to the coil, battery and earth - so five wires in all.
Ignition ampliifer (ecu it's not) is located between battery and headlight on mine, so that could be a good place to start looking. Corroded, frayed or disingrating wires are a more likely culprit than the box itself. This page might help identify connectors: https://www.prancingmoose.com/volvoh...html#240series Last edited by BicycleBoy; May 5th, 2022 at 00:15. |

Long shots
Have you checked the carb diaphragm for leaks? Even a pin-hole can cause similar issues to those described. Alternatively, it is possible that the diaphragm has shifted slightly as there's a boss on it that should sit in an indentation on the carb body and it takes very little displacement for the carb to get "huffy" about running.

Hi, if you see my post on the forum I mention a screw that popped out of the inlet in front of the carb. Check this, it seems oh too familiar .
Indecently, it happened again , I had a new one with new o ring to install and it saved the day. The O ring can flatten and deteriorate and with the force from the intake manifold can pop out. https://www.volvoforums.org.uk/showt...=322090&page=4 Last edited by Bob 1967; May 23rd, 2022 at 19:47. |
