Default Fuel filter

Do I need any special tools to change the fuel filter on my 2008 xc70 D5?

I changed the one in my previous car which was a v70 D5 (that was a p2 though).

Yes and no. I bought 35€

But I changed it also without.

So you need extension (middle one) and it's going without problem.
but I bought tool because I change filter every 20-30kkm

What does your fuel filter housing look like?

I have a 2011 D3 and although I could have bought the official tool, I already had an offset spanner (32mm i think) which worked fine.

With 18mm wrench loose drain plug . Attach some hose 6mm (I think) to control flow of diesel. Perfect would be in some bottle and you can refill filter with that diesel.

Later do not overtight that drain plug. It's by VIDA only 2 Nm. It has 2 o-rings, dont worry.

After you change it, do not start car immediately. Ignition ON and OFF 10-15 times. Let diesel come to high pressure pump.

Use gloves, it will be dirty.
Do not overtight filter cap.
Put some oil on that big o ring

Same process on D3, D4 and D5 5 cylinder motors. I am told it's much harder on 4WD models (XC70 mainly), because there's more in the way of accessing the filter. I bought one of the cast metal gripper rings and that works really well, however i have done it with a strap type oil filter wrench too. But not a chain type as that could crack the plastic housing. VolvoSweden on Youtube has a good video (made by his mate with a diesel) of how to change the filter easily.

Vital to do the start up process as outlined by #Passenger above, otherwise you will flatten the battery trying to suck fuel through. Yes, I've done it...

Yea, me to. He was trying to start 1-1.5min car. Luckily new battery, but that high pressure pump V4 do not like dry spinning.
